Okay, okay, now I know that all of you gamers out there who did or still does own an original NES has had problems starting the damn machine up. Just turning it on was a task. With the push of the on button came waves of frustration. As the light would flick on and off, the index finger tapping the reset button, taking the cartrige out to blow on the inside of the game and inside the machine. But once you got it, there was nothing you could be more grateful for.
It's my goal to sparta kick all hipsters in the throat....

Heheh, this topic really brings back the days. I remember having to blow across the bottom of the cartridge. If that didn't work than I would have to insert cartridge and almost snap in down from the edge, you had to do this real quick, in one split second motion otherwise it wouldn't work.

You know how when you insert the cartridge and push down on it, how it would make a clicking sound and slightly raise up. Well I remember a friend who would push down on the cartridge, hear the click but put an object like a pen above the cartridge so it would not click up. Don't know why it worked, but it did.

Ah yes, the system with the flawed connectors.

However, I remember resurrecting my Goldeneye 007 cart this same way. D:

When I had one? I still do, and still play it. I literally would get as much out of those connectors as humanly possible....

At first I would keep some rubbing alcohol and Q-tips on hand for the cartridge edges, whcih worked for awhile.......

Then I started the blowing thing, which worked allright for awhile, then a friend showed me that the "best way" was to slide the bottom of the cart along the edge of the entry point on the Nintendo.

It was then that I got clever, and found ways to use "Force" to get the pins to work. First off, I would jam bad 3.5" floppy diskettes on top of the cartridge between it and the top of the NES casing. Sometimes I would run the console with the top cover off with some books on top of the cardridge with something to stop it underneath, were talking Rube Goldburg type mechanics here, just to get a 10 year old NES running.

On my most recent, I just use the Game Genie and that seems to work fine.

I was funny how blowing on the game cartrage and intot he system was the only way it would work. of course the other problem was over heating. where the game would jsut freeze up because you were playing for too long. i remember many times jsut putting my hand ont he back of the nes to see how warm is was.

Blowing in the carts does bring back memories, but if you value your collection, never do it again. The moisture from saliva in your breath is what increases the conductivity and allows the games to work, but it also increases corrosion of the pins on the game cartridge and inside your system, and over time it can eventually eat clear through the metal. I've seen an extreme case where this actually happened, and the metal contacts inside the NES were completely corroded and destroyed. A few of the games in the owner's collection were nearly destroyed from corrosion as well.

The connection problem is caused by oxidized contacts and weakening pins in the NES's 72-pin connector. The best way to fix oxidized pins on the cartridge is with cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol. Fixing the connector in the NES isn't hard, but it requires that you open up your NES. In most cases, it isn't hard to remove the 72-pin connector (you only need a screwdriver) and bend the pins back into shape, and they'll last you a few more years before you have to fix them again. In worse cases you can buy brand-new replacement connectors online very cheaply. I bought a few of them for about $3 each. They install easily and are much tighter than the original connector ever was. I haven't had a single problem starting my games since I replaced my old connector.

Please don't destory your games by blowing in them.

Yup! That's exactly what I do to solve the problem. It works pretty much everytime. The only catch is you need to have a Game Genie. If you don't want to use any game codes just press start and the game should work great :D

How is that thing? I heard it was problematic to holy high heaven.

No, not at all. It even played games that I thought were broken, I prefer it over the original NES. (the cool design, and how good it works)

Mind you, I haven't played one, but it sounds like it does what it does well. You might want to check the list of what it doesn't do before buying one though.

Most of the games that don't work, suck. I have the only 2 good ones out of the ones that don't work. & I just tested them and they both work fine

If you don't mind RF support, and you are a collector (like myself), I would recommend trying to track down the Top-Loading NES Nintendo released in 1993. There are a lot of clones out there, so be careful, but I haven't had any serious problems with mine yet.

I still do that for Famicom Nintendo, and Super Famicom Nintendo the original original. I don't have the american variants of those, but the Nintedo 64.
I've been pretty good with my technique. It's been like 14 years since the very first blowing of the cartridge. Heh...

I dont know how blowing in the games got them to work, but it did.

You really shouldn't blow in them.

and then u had to blow on the games
