He practically built the company from the ground up after the original arcade release of Donkey Kong in 1981!

To say Miyamoto practically bult the company takes credit away from a lot of people, not to mention the company has been successful for well over one hundred years now. Certainly he was instrumental in changing the company and creating the image of Nintendo we now have as a video game company. However, Gunpei Yokoi was very important to Nintendo's future in gaming even before that, and continued to be until he lost his job over the Virtual Boy.

Miyamoto is not retired or even semi-retired. He directs games with less frequency, but his new main role is sort of like a producer, less directly involved in most games than he used to be. He spends a lot of his time watching what other directors at Nintendo do and training them to think more like him, occasionally making suggestions where he feels they're needed. In that capacity, he's had a hand in shaping almost every first and second party Nintendo game that comes out. It was even his idea to put Metroid Prime into a first-person perspective. He still comes up with new game concepts (Pikmin, anyone?) and still spends time actually directing games. He was in charge of New Super Mario Bros. and is currently in control of Twilight Princess and Super Mario Galaxy. I don't think he would retire even if Nintendo wanted him to! :D

                        Thanks for that information.

I was just trying to stress his importance in the gaming industry since he's like Walt Disney or something of the field. Your right there were a lot of talented developers that helped him out but he was definetely a driving force.

Although I do admit since he has started to work less around the time of Majora's Mask or so, I haven't enjoyed his games as much. I really do hope he has a lot of input into the upcoming Zelda and Mario games! :D

Yes its true Miyamoto didnt build Nintendo but its safe to say he built the video game industry to make it what it is today. Sure other games were around before Nintendo and sure there was alot of creative talent around before Miyamoto but his vision is so unique that most people associate classic gaming with his work though they dont know who he is (hope that made sense =p ) Hes a huge idol of mine.. no he didnt take acid Mrs.Link and sure hes rich but no money could buy the fame he has in Japan and around the world. I think what makes him so special is that he didnt have previous works or peers to guide his vision; he pioneered it and it stays so true even to today. And flames right, hes not in retirement at all. In fact he has a huge role in Twilight Princess (hes a producer) and hes usually listed as the Producer in credits for many of Nintendo's games; Satoru Iwata is usually the Executive producer.

As for Twilight Princess a few tidbits:
Twilight Princess was first delayed from Spring 06 to Fall 06 because there was alot more content Miyamoto wanted to add to the game (which IMHO I welcome)

Miyamoto said that TP would be the most mature Zelda game to date; at points he said it would make you cry

It will be released for both the Wii and the GC; the Wii will offer some interactivity with the Wiimote (like using your sword and shooting arrows.. not sure about others)

Miyamoto said this will be the last Zelda as we know it. Whatever that means

So Ill leave you with a quote from Wikipedia on Shigeru Miyamoto:

                          Wikipedia wrote:
He is widely considered to be one of the world's most celebrated game designers and is often called one of the fathers of modern video-gaming. His titles are characterized by refined control-mechanics and interactive worlds in which the players are encouraged to discover things for themselves, as well as basic storylines, which had been almost unheard of before he introduced one of the first, featuring Mario.

Actually it was delayed around fall '05 to no sooner than April '06, I believe. Despite what a lot of people seem to think, it hasn't been delayed over and over either. Just that once.

Me, I've very excited about this game. I'm a huge Zelda fan all around and I've been waiting for this one since the first trailer back in '04. I'll definitely be getting the GCN version when it comes out, but whenever I get around to getting a Wii I pick up that version too.

You're right. After I re-read the post I remembered it wasnt the first time it was delayed. But it was delayed from Spring 06 to Fall 06 for content. I cant remember why it was first delayed
