I recently got my N64 out of storage and now I'm a bit confused. I've been playing Zelda alot and thought about buying the 2nd Zelda game for 64, the mask one. but i need that expansion pack, what does it do? is it for memory? does the N64 have built in memory. I have a memory card/rumble pack on my controler and i dont even know if the memory card is used for memory. do you see what i'm saying?

the expansion pack was a way to make kids go by some useless chip that let you do more stuff in certain games...in perfect dark (greatest fps game ever) it allowed you to play the freakin campain.

good luck finding one...it took me a couple malls to find the xbox dvd remote.
Dude, chicks are like voltron, the more you hook up the better it gets-Tucker (red vs blue)

Ahem... The real answer is that it adds four megabytes of RAM to the console. This is dynamic memory, not storage memory, so it's not at all like the memory card in your controller. It lets the N64 hangle more/bigger textures, keep track of more objects at once, etc. This is very useful in theorey, but not a lot of developers wanted to make games that would require people to buy it. There was something almost exactly the same for the Sega Saturn.

At today's second-hand prices, it's worth buying the expansion. Games to pick up if you get one include Perfect Dark, Hybrid Heaven, and maybe the N64 version of Resident Evil 2. I know there were a few racing games that used it too, but I can't recall titles at the moment. Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness also used it, but that game pretty much sucked.

techniquely speaking, it allows you to play the game perfect dark, you can't do anything on that game with out it. it gives higher rez graphics to some games, but you need to remeber to do it at the options screen, some games even needed a freaking cheat (i mean a real cheat, not a mod or anthing)(Vigilate 8)

its mainly used in perfect dark, though, it does give games higher rez, and some other games may make use it too.

I don't know when you searched for yours, but I found mine quite easily.

Also, as far as Majora's Mask goes, it sucks. It's too short. D:

I remember those they came with DK64. So it was mainly used for that game as well.

No cause i have perfect dark and with no expansion pack you can still play, With it you can play 4 players, without it just 2. Without just challenges multiplayer against bots. With it the story mode

What the expansion does, flamepanther pretty much explained it. Not many games were required to use it (aside from DK64 and Majora's Mask) and it came a late point in the N64's life; at around late 99' I believe, which is why its difficult and rather pricey to find.

The Expansion Pack is worth it for Majora's Mask. It's one of my favorite Zelda games and better than OoT I think. As for the comment above, Majora's mask is only short if you only do the dungeons. The Bomber's Notebook, heart pieces and masks make it nearly equal to OoT in length (if I figure right).

Donkey Kong 64 is also really good. Personally not as good as Banjo or Mario, but it is a long and fun play.

I thought Pokemon Stadium required it too ? :?

Nope, I have Pokemon stadium. Pokemon stadium though had a card thing that you plugged into the back of the N64 controller so that made it so you could play pokemon game boy games on the N64 if the Pokemon stadium cartridge was in, and so you could transfer your pokemon from the gameboy games to Pokemon stadium. pretty useless, but even harder to find.

I got mine with Donkey Kong 64. It was one of the games that you had to use with the Expansion Pack. I don't know what other games required it, but DK64 is the only one I have that requires it...

Majora's mask needed the expansion pack as well

iirc Pokemon Stadium 2 needed it as well

I'd say it's safe to say that probably half the games made after 2000 needed the EP.

Other games I can think of that need (or basically need, even though it's officially "optional";) include Resident Evil 2, Hybrid Heaven, Perfect Dark, and Castlevania 64: Legacy of Darkness. I may have mentioned these in the thread already, but since the topic has come up again and I'm too lazy to check, there you go.

I also have a homebrew demo called "Nacho 64" that uses the pack. It's completely non-interactive, but it's amusing, and the graphics looks like a Dreamcast game.
