after getting Mame awhile back, I decided to revisit some old arcade classics like Q*Bert, Centipede, Galaga, Galaxian, Phoenix, Donkey Kong Jr., Burgertime, Joust, Mr. Do!, Discs of Tron, Popeye, and those cool gun games such as Chiller, Combat, and Crossbow.

Is it just me, or are some of those earliest games some of the most innovative, challenging, fun, interesting, and weird games there is?? Not to mention the sound effects are just amazing to games like Q*Bert, Galaxian, Joust, and Combat.

Walking into an arcade during those days with all of the sound effects and music from these games was amazing. These games will never die. Too bad those types of games had such a small window of time.

How I wish we could time travel and be back during the arcade age. For me, the entire 80's and even early 90's always offered an arcade in some fashion or another. Whether it was the back room of the pizza place that had games or the spot in the bowling lanes with a "true" arcade, it was there.

Someone mentioned that the sounds really made everything amazing. In addition to the sounds, it was also what you saw, what you smelled, etc.., Some places had the aroma of pizzas being made and others had the clouds of smoke hovering over certain machines. Some had the smell of burgers and fries or the cracking of a ball hitting a pin. The experiences were so wonderful that a mere description doesn't do them justice.

Look at the games. While they started in a primitive yet enjoyable state, each year got progressively better. First it was Pac Man or Joust, then it was Paperboy, Rampage, TMNT, etc.., Some of the best memories that I ever had came from playing games at an arcade. That era is unfortunately over but who knows what the future holds. Being that retro is in, maybe arcades will have a rebirth.

Has AirGallet arcade machine ever been released in the U.S.? When I start up the game I think it says its not supposed to be sold in the U.S.

Well, thats just it, they had to be. They couldn't rely on flashy graphics, because there were no such thing as flashy graphics back then. Instead, for a game to be good, it had to be GOOD. Good solid gameplay, replayability, innovation, the whole nine yards. The game was make or break by how good the game part of it was, not by how many hookers you could run over or how many chunks the body flies apart in.

Ah, the battlecry of the Retro gamer...
                      "There was life before Playstation!!!"
