Ah, the Sega Dreamcast. How I loved that console and so did many others, but then Sony and their deceptive ways built the unstoppable PS2 hype machine that sent the poor Dreamcast to the trash heap. So I was observing this year's E3 and couldn't help but notice an uncanny similarity with the E3 of 2000. Let me break it down: E3 2000 Dreamcast was still in it's first year after a successful launch, critical praise and love from it's owners. Though it had its detractors, mainly the Playstation fanboys. The year before, Sony had shown off impressive tech demos and FMV that fooled many into believing that the PS2 would be the greatest game machine ever. Sony promised "Toy Story graphics". Well, E3 2000 came and the playable PS2 games were no better looking than the Dreamcast and many were worse. Playstation fanboys claimed they were much greater than the Dreamcast or that the PS2 devs didn't have enough time. E3 2006 360 is into it's first year with a succesful launch and love from it's owners. The PS2 fanboys believe that the PS3 will be the greatest console ever thanks to Sony's showing of FMV at last year's E3. Some are shocked and others in denial when the playable PS3 games are no better looking than the 360's. Fanboys claim it's because the devs didn't have enough time. Others claim they are way better. E3 2000 Sony, in response to Sega's online service, announces that the PS2 will have online too but are vague about the details. Some Sony fanboys use that announcement as an "in your face" to DC fans. We all know how Sony's online plans turned out. E3 2006 Sony, in response to Xbox Live, announce that they will have an online service that mimmicks XboxLive but are vague about the details. I wonder if they will deliver this time? E3 2000 Sony announces it's price for the PS2 of $299 which was at the time 100 dollars more than the DC. Sony fans say it is worth the extra money because it is more powerful and has a DVD player. Sega shows off a DVD player add-on. E3 2006 Sony announces the price of it's PS3 at $499/$599, a hundred dollars(at minumum) more than the 360. Sony fans say that it's worth the extra money because it is more powerful and has a Blu-ray player. Microsoft shows a HD-DVD player add on. E3 2000 Peter Moore, President of Sega of America, is disgusted by Sony's hype and says, "The Dreamcast has better graphics and is a better value. It's a clear choice for the consumer." E3 2006 Peter Moore, vice-president at Microsoft, is disgusted by Sony's hype and says, "You can buy an Xbox and a Wii for the price of a PS3. It's a clear choice for the consumer." Deja vu! Weird huh? |

Replace X-BOX 360 with Nintendo Wii and that's a bit closer to what you want. Nintendo is making a funky little system that may not make it. Sounds more like something Sega would do. If anything, I think that the X-BOX 360 and PS3 will probably have the same look to their graphics. I'm not expecting much out of Sony, since I read something about them doing poorly at E3. Then again, I never expect much out of a multi-media (Come on, it isn't a REAL console!) system. |

| The difference may be that while the PS2 got a really hot reception at E3 and from the fans in 2000, there isn't nearly as much interest in the PS3 this year. Also, while the PS2 was significantly more expensive than the Dreamcast, it could still be thought of as "affordable". There's no way a $600 price tag for a fully functional system is affordable, and that's going to chill their sales a bit. |

The system in the $300 360 bundle is the same as it is in the $400 one, where as the PS3 system in their $500 bundle is a watered down version. Sony also urked a lot of their fans too, so as similar as the PS3 and the 360 may be to the PS2 and Dreamcast, chances are history isn't going to repeat itself. wrote: Nintendo is making a funky little system that may not make it. Not likely. Nintendo blew everyone away at E3, despite a controversial controller and name. This is looking to be their best show since the SNES days. |

| The PS2 was able to survive its slow start because of Sega's poor marketing and Nintendo's very late start and poor launch selection. It was easy for people to wait for PS2 to get decent games because competitors weren't doing much better. Microsoft has strong marketing and Nintendo's launch selection this time is better than any library of launch titles I can remember for any system. A slow start in this generation will mean a loss of customers to other platforms, which means fewer exclusive games or even fewer games at all for PS3, which give the system less chance to build momentum later on. I think Sony will have to make a severe price cut to salvage this, but they don't seem to be willing to do that yet. |

| wrote: The PS2 was able to survive its slow start because of Sega's poor marketing and Nintendo's very late start and poor launch selection Slow start? From what I remember, the PS2 was anything but a slow-start! The system was so hyped up, that the lines were gathering overnight just to be the first to grab a system & made it near-impossible to obtain one on launch day or even the few weeks after that untill well after Christmas until pre-orders were all filled. They did, however, have a lacklustre set of launch titles that were anything but memorable. I remember getting up at 5am going to an out-of-the-way Sears hoping to snatch up a PS2 there in the early AM before work... and low-n-behold, there were already a dozen or so peeps out there waiting! So that kinda let me loose onto not picking up a PS2... ever. Yet at the original X-Box launch, I was able to walk into Target on the opening day and not only pick up an X-Box, but also get a free folding chair that came with it (Target exclusive)... and they had some killer apps I remember. Will the same thing happen this year? It seems a reverse order. People waited to pick up a PS2 last time, but now they'll be able to get a PS3 on opening day... While people on opening day picked up an X-Box had to wait for a 360 sometimes the night before! Ironic, isn't it? |

| What Ekkostar said; Nintendo has been in the copper-markets ever since N64, so if Wii fails, that's probably it for them at the console side. They still have DS, but is that enough? The same can't be said about Microsoft, since they have enough money to start all over again thrice over if they just want; their other products can just keep sucking in the money. |

Nintendo may not be selling as many units, but they've actually been consistently making a bigger profit than Sony or Microsoft. In fact, Sony occasionally loses money on the games business, while Microsoft has done nothing but lose money. That's going to continue, so it would be sheer insanity for Nintendo to just call it quits because fewer people have their system in their homes. Not gonna happen, folks. Also, if the phenomenon that was this year's E3 is any indication, Nintendo will have no worries about Wii sales. Remember when everyone thought the DS was doomed? Now it's outselling the PSP by several millions of units. Wii could easily be much bigger. Comparing it to Dreamcast makes no sense. Dreamcast didn't bring gamers anything new except better graphics and that stupid VMU thing, which was next to useless, so of course there was little incentive for most gamers to buy one. I love the little Dreamcast, but it has nothing in common with Wii. |

| i just dont see the comparison between DC and Xbox 360. the DC was a great system but its biggest flaw was that it had no dvd support, dvd where becoming very popular at that time and this oversight was what killed the DC. no problems with Xbox 360, it has dvd support and is way cheaper than the PS3 |
