You probably read this and was like  but dont worry it aint sick or gross in anyway. This topic is for you to use your imagination and imagine if you will what is down below on old NES games. EXAMPLE: When Mario falls off a cliff whats down there, spikes, a endless hole, or a gateway to THE TWILIGHT ZONE doodoodoodoodoo lol. I have to go with spikes but use whatever your mind thinks of whats down there because I am really curious to see answers. Also if this topic is already up sorry for waisting your time.

you're probably right, there's probably spikes down there, how else is it an instant KO.

but wait, Lava pits also do that (cept on mario 64 and RPG)

Oh yeah, here's a WTF in a videogame: Super Mario Bros. 1: You fall into a water pit, and you die. Yet in the underwater levels you can swim, what the boat is up with this D:

Oh, that's easy! It's a void in spacetime where matter and energy cannot escape. Mario's body is broken down to the point of protons and electrons and then all his molecules are transversed into an alternate universe which is ultimately the exact same as the first. Except for the fact that he only has 2 lives left. I don't know what the heck happens when he completely runs out of lives.

I agree adventure_of_link about that water thing I definatly agree what is up with that he can swim underwater but cant jump in water whats up with that. Hey about the parallel universe theory bamasailorjra who knows what happens maybe his protons and electrons got spreaded across all of the universes. Also I actually never got to play mario 64 and rpg.(well i played mario 64 once over my cousins)

I think that the black gap under Bowser bridge in Super Mario Bros. leads to a dark area with a toad screaming into his ear "Sorry Mario, but our princess is in another castle." over and over again.

Really though, I don't tend to think what the gap leads to under the bridge. I just think it's never ending darkness that he falls through.

I thought it lead to a portal into outer space when I was young. From a scientific point of view, it would lead to the inner core of the earth, where Mario would burn up from the intense heat and become crushed to death from the intense pressure!

From a game development perspective, the area below the bottom of the screen in the original Super Mario Bros. is used for storing background and environment modifier triggers. When an object is placed there, it changes the scenery, triggers a special terrain object, or changes some other property of the level. Maybe not exactly what the topic was about, but an interesting bit of info :)

I just thought it was really high narrow cliffs that are over 500 feet high. Mario jumps in, he dies from the impact.

This reminds me of that one level in Super Mario Bros 3 in Dark Land, where one of the ships is floating on what is clearly lava. However, Mario can still swim in it, despite that (from the previous levels) he can die like that by simply touching it. Whats with that??

A lotta space. But you know that when there is gravity, you have to meet the ground sometime... Of course, it might be possible that those holes are just a meter deep, but have some super-glue at the bottom. Imagine Mario trying to jump out from there.
