I used to borrow my friends cartridge of Maniac Mansion for the NES and play it. Loved it, and it openend my eyes for games like The Secret Monkey Island and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, which may very well be my favorite computer game of all time.

Haven't played Maniac Mansion for a while now, but I remember it was very easy to finish with Bernard in the team.

He really does. Ironic how the obligatory kid has to be the one of least use.

For me it was Monkey Island first, then move ahead about 10 years, I get a NES Emulator and downloaded Maniac Mansion, I have to say, I prefer Monkey Island to any Maniac Mansion game. Maniac Mansion is cool, but I always liked the Monkey Island game, and thought it was neat that they actaully managed to create a game where the sole reward for getting something right was not "not dying", but "not getting frustrated".

While I like Maniac Mansion I prefer it's sequel: Day of the Tentacle. It was the first adventure game I played and the graphics, voice-acting and humour blew me away.

Not to mention the fact that Purple Tentacle is one of the coolest villains ever.

Anyone recall this Maniac Mansion trick? I remember hearing about it on Video Power:

With anyone on your team, go into Nurse Edna's room. Then, before she takes you to the dungeon, go to "New Kid" and select either of the other two. Stay with whomever you choose for about 15 seconds, then go back to the kid in Edna's room. She will now be frozen, and you can collect any items without fear of being captured.

I remember when I found out that you could put Weird Ed's hamster in the microwave, and I begged my parents to take the game back. Yeah, I know that sounds stupid, but I was only 7 or 8 back then! I heard that they took this out in later versions of the game; I never even tried my copy to see if it was one of the early releases. Damn, I could've had a collectors' item!

Finally, I agree that Dave was worthless. I always stuck him outside the house to wait for Weird Ed's package.

Remember reading about it on Nintendo -magazine, but it was never published in Finland. Got the walkthrough, but not the game. :|

I've never played the NES version of Maniac Mansion but I've read that it was heavily censored by Nintendo. For example, on the PC/Amiga version there's a message on the wall which says: For a good time, call Edna which apparently was replaced with something less...exclipit. Also, if Edna catches you she either says: "I should have tied you to my bed" (if the character's a boy) or "You're lucky that you're not a boy" (or something like that, if the character's a girl).

Here's an article about the things I wrote about in my post.

Those Scumm/Lucas Arts games are great. Me too I was a Monkey Island junkie, played Sam and Max, Full Throttle, got a bit into Loom but spent most of my time in the Sierra games (Kings/Police/Heros Quest, Leisure Suit Larry). And I also agree, Maniac Mansion II was quite a bit better than I. I heard a rumor a while back that Lucas Arts was thinking of bring back the Sam and Max series though Im not sure if that ever got the green light.

The adventure games from LucasArts were all great (well, I haven't played Zak McKracken or The Last Crusade yet so I can't say anything about them). They were funny, had extremely memorable characters and later on voice-acting that was far above the one heard in other games (at least in my opinion).

The Sierra games were also really good, I always felt that the Hero's Quest/Quest for Glory series were the best games ever made by Sierra, or maybe the first Gabriel Knight game holds that position I'm not sure.
I can't think of a better plot in an adventure game than the one in Sins of the fathers.
