That during the 80's Hasbro of G1 Transformers/G.I Joe fame was about to get into the console industry. I kid you not as the console in question was going to be the Nemo.

It was designed by Tom Zito, the game design base of this system will be VHS tapes. Yes this system will be of games in which you save data on VHS tapes. It was even going to be supported by the likes of rival toy company Mattel and the like.

However during the course of the 80's Hasbro canned the idea due to how expensive the console will be. (And I can understand why especially since I don't see how VHS tapes can be a good basis for a game console.) However Tom Zito did not completely give up as Hasbro did allow him to have certain games such as Night Trap and Sewer Shark be remade for the Sega CD and 3DO.

I can understand why the Nemo died a premature death but still this is a fascinating bit of history. Granted it would be innovative however needless to say it most likely would not last that well.

yeah i remember reading something about this console awhile back. what a mess it would have been, trying to keep track of massive VHS tapes for video game saves

Neo Geo games are bigger than VHS tapes.

Dunno if VHS Tapes could even work out, though to be fair it sounds like a step up from Cassete tapes though. (And yeah I've heard of consoles that did that.)

I would more picture something like a LaserDisc to be more Video Game friendly for the 80's. Granted it would still be expensive and the load times will probably be completely horrendous. But it seems more probable IMO though I could be wrong.

But I can understand why Hasbro ever thought of something like this in the first place. They probably thought of trying to avoid competition in console, arcade and computer gaming. So they thought do something completely different on one of the mediums so it will be judged on its own terms. It theroritcally sounds good however it ended up to be something rather flawed like this which ended up being a part of why the Sega CD was so flawed.

But one can't help but wonder if they tried to go for a bit more conventional method and could it work out well enough? Whether it will be releasing games more or even go for doing a console themselves. (Hey if Mattel can do it why not them?) IF it was the latter then they probably wouldn't beat the NES but they will most likely do better than the Sega Master System or anything Atari tried. (Granted thats no hard task but still.) But the former is more likely to work of course.
