The heart of any food fight on television is you only get one take. You can't reshoot the scene since the set is wrecked and so are the actors. What you try to do in a food fight scene is not get injured or injure anyone else, and try not to fall on the floor!
Here's clip from the "Cheers" Thanksgiving episode. Many newspapers around the country did write-ups for this holiday episode because Cheers' fans would finally get to meet Norm's wife Vera, always mentioned by Norm at the bar but never seen on the show. That night Vera finally made her grand appearance, lol.
