Here's my low-down on guesstimations about all this stuff..
PS3 was supposed to be in playable form for over a year now. Last year's E3 show was supposed to show off the playable games, but had nothing more than a tech-demo.
X-Box 360, however, had everything it needed & started pumping up their booth with everything to guarantee a launch.
PS3 promised a Spring '06 launch... hell, a March 06 launch... but many shows came & left without anything different or new. They just kept taunting all their latest & greatest technology and what it could mean for us gamers... but no pricing point & no playable games... or even new footage of real-time games!
Christmas comes & Goes, and still nothing... X-360 is rough out of the gates due to lack of hardware. Some people are skeptical on the 360 'cause most of the games are sixty bucks and don't offer anything more unique except a prettier game.
...still no signs of PS3
...Gamespot has more news, and says if the system came out today, with the technology it has, it would retail for around 900 or so!
Does anyone really think they'll make a Fall launch? I doubt it. X-Box 360 still doesn't have a killer-app, and they're lacking a lot of software to really help sell the system. They may be in the lead now 'cause they're the ONLY next-gen system out, but if PS3 EVER comes out and comes out at a reasonable pricing point of no more than $500 (499) for the full system, then it'll knock X-Box 360 off the block... if it's cheaper than all the more power.
Does anyone think that PS3 will really make it in time for a fall launch AND stay relatively cheap?
E3 will tell you for sure if it's going to come out. If they don't have at LEAST a half dozen games playable & near complete... forget it... count on 2007.
If they DO... then there's a chance, and you can start reserving a system, but they will probably be in limited quantity, and I bet no matter how many companies past mistakes have shown, Sony will not have enough supply for the demand, unless they price themselves out of contention.
Nobody wants to pay an extra 300 or so dollars for Blue-Ray DVD's when DVD's are still just fine.
