So there's been a lot of talk about this Scottish independence referendum coming up, and I was curious what people think on the issue. I've been reading up on it myself, and honestly I haven't heard much of a compelling reason for independence. The state is already plenty autonomous in the U.K. with their own government, and apparently they want to keep the pound anyway. Why strain relationships and threaten economic stability with secession, what do they have to gain? I know there's a lot of oil in Scotland, but do they really intend on hording it?

Of course, as an American, I only know so much about the relationship between the two countries. From what I've read, it sounds like England and Northern Ireland don't want independence (obviously), Scotland is split halfway, and the rest of the world doesn't care (although I bet France is secretly hoping for an independent Scotland). I'd like to hear what others think, particularly folks from the U.K. and in favor of secession.

Where's jellybeankid when you need him?

In all seriousness though, I bet if polled the majority of the citizens of Scotland wouldn't feel that adamant about the issue. Probably just some power players seeking opportunity.

With all the crazy news going on this year I can't understand why Scotland wants a vote on independence now. This has to be the result of a process that started sometime last year, maybe the Scottish Parliament needs to feel useful?

The only thing I know for sure, a "yes" vote will result in years of government to government negotiations and settlements over everything.

For example, who really owns the North Sea oil fields in the Scottish territorial waters? By agreement, that oil belongs to the United Kingdom.
If Scotland goes independent it should only get to own about 20 percent of current production. And you guys know that North Sea production has been in decline lately.

Petroleum revenue is a finicky thing to predict into the future. All supporters of Scottish independence dreaming of free government services like health care, education and housing vouchers may be fooling themselves.
