It seems to be very common today for moms to bring their son's in the women's restroom and fathers to bring their girls into the men's restrooms well into grade school age. When I was kid I don't seem to recall anyone in grade school being brought into the opposite gender restroom. I do recall seeing some kids being told to wait until they got home. So unless the parents were germaphobes or just lazy/mean, they could have feared stranger danger and felt it just wasn't socially acceptable to bring a school aged kid to the opposite gender restroom?
I don't remember what age I was allowed to go in the restroom alone, but it was at a pretty young age. I do remember going to the women's restroom with my mom before I started school. I remember the women would always smile at me (I was a cute kid). My mom says I was always shy about going in there with her, but I don't remember that.
We would frequently go to this plant nursery to buy stuff for the yard. For the longest I would go into the restroom sometimes alone since it was small and no one was ever in there. One day when I was about 4 one of the workers asked me why I was going into the women's restroom. I told him I thought it was the men's which I did. I felt embarrassed and after that I went into the men's restroom there which always smelled like old pee. I was a little disappointed I couldn't use the restroom I was used to using.
So at what age did you start using public restrooms alone? Do you remember having to use the opposite gender restroom?

I remember this up until the age of like 7 or 8! LOL It could've been younger, but if i was out with my mom she would take me to into the bathroom with her. But I had a kinda fear of public restrooms so I'd usually hold it until I got home.

My mom sometimes takes me with her to the bathroom when I was
like 5-7 years old. I guess that's the only time it's perfectly
acceptable for a boy to be in the women's bathroom in our
society.

I vaguely remember my mom bringing me into the ladies room. I was one of those kids who never went poop in a public restroom till I was like 15, I just couldn't bear the thought of it. Plus I had this odd habit of having to take my shoes off.

I remember going to the mens' room in 8th grade. I ran the hell outta there. And my older brother had to go in the ladies' room with my mom until 12th grade.
I feel sorry for all the shit he heard then...

Your brother had to go to the ladies room until the 12th grade? You have got to be kidding me? Is this a typo? No one called the police?
Unless the child has a disability. They should not be going into the opposite gender restroom past the age of 7. Stranger danger is over hyped by the media. There are not men hiding in the restrooms waiting for a child to be all alone. If its a crowded restroom the child will be fine. The parent can check to make sure a smaller one is empty if they're so worried. They can ask anyone going in to wait till their child is finish.
