Since this is my 2nd day as a new member of Retro Junk, I'd figured I would give everyone a treat: Taking you way back to the summer when everything was better and simpler. 1988-1991 were good years and relevant to this discussion.

Its 8:30am you wake up. Got the whole place to yourself with parents at work. No school but you have a full day of work ahead of you. So many challenges await you throughout the day. Do I go into the alien's lair in Contra or hang out with my friends outside while we talk about who will be the new WWF champion as Hulkamania is played out?

It's now 8:35am! Time to get up or shut up. I gotta check off things on my to do list. Fix a bowl of Fruiti Pebbles. Check. Watch a episode of David the Gnome on Nickelodeon. Check. Of course watch Grimm's Fairy Tales on Nickelodeon. Check.

Wait! What is that sound? Oh good its the a/c coming on inside. Must be the heat outside kicking in. Time to keep moving on my to do list. But wait, the a/c feels so good inside the house with the window blinds closed. Let me finish watching a commercial of WWF Superstars or Saturday Night's Main Event (or Monday Night Raw whichever the year you remember)

Ok now headed back to the bedroom. Feel like beating Jason in Friday the 13th on the NES. Check. Screw it Jason is too hard. Lets go for Castlevania II on the NES and see which mansion I can make it through. Check. All of that walking through forests and hearing the townspeople talk about soup and garlic is making me hungry. Time for Totino's pizza rolls!

Lunch is done. Totino's pizza rolls and grape Kool-Aid did the job. Check.

Knock on the door. Childhood friends! Come in! Hot outside? Grab a couple of cold ones (glasses of iced grape kool-aid) and lets head to my dungeon (room).

Ok buddies, shall we all try a hand at Contra or Double Dragon on the NES? What about WWf Wrestlemania or WWF Wrestlemania Challenge?

Speaking of which, which one of you guys is looking forward to a cool segment of tonight's wrestling event? Do you think Andre the Giant or King Kong Bundy will show the Hulkster a thing or two? What about that little squeak Mach Man? Queen Elizabeth can do so much better!

Well friends, time for you guys to hit the road. My dad will be home soon and I gotta get ready for little league baseball game. Ah my stomach is in knots now. I'm worried I'm going to screw up at the plate.

Thank God this game is over with! Got my concession stand sno cone in hand now. Oh good its only 8:30pm at night. Got time for my dad to swing me by the local video store to rent a couple of vhs tapes. Lets see, should I rent the Goonies? Stand by Me? The Burbs? Lost Boys? Lets swing by the WWF section real quick to pick up 1988 or 1989 WWF Summerslam! Is that the awesome Zeus against the Hulkster? Check! Now swing by the NES section and we'll call it a day.

Lets head home. I got a cheeseburger from Sonic, Pepsi Clear soda at home waiting for me. Too bad I missed the WWF night segment episode. Damn baseball game. Oh well I think Tales from the Darkside or Tales from the Crypt will come on at 10:00pm so I still got time to play a quick NES game.

God that intro of Tales from the Darkside is scary! What is up with that theme song? I can't move from my couch. Time to pop in a vhs tape and forget this scary stuff.

..........a/c going on at night. Playing with the WWF hasbro figure. Think I got a friend from baseball team coming over tomorrow. Life is good. I wonder if it gets better when I get older?

Great description of that time period. Not too many 80s kids left on here anymore that would understand.

Summers were great back then. Your profile says you were born in 1982. Did you get to stay by yourself at the age of 6? I did from the age of 8 when my mom went back to work. We were lucky to have parents that let us stay by ourselves at a young age. I knew kids that had to go to daycare/babysitters until the age of 12!

Only a few things were different for me. I didn't play any sports and I stayed up late at night and didn't wake up until the afternoon. Look back I wish I did and enjoyed my day more and maybe made more friend. One reason I didn't was because it was so hot here in Houston and some of the kids in my hood were pricks. Regardless I always found something to keep me occupied. My imagination came into play when all else failed.
