The profession has changed and so has the culture of schools. It used generally people that were serious about teaching. The stereotypical teacher was a spinster (woman that never married, had no kids and lived a quiet, private life). The teacher had a lot of power in the classroom. She/he generally got to make the rules and say what was allowed and what wasn't. There wasn't the micromanaging, insane focus on state testing or the bureaucracy about hugging students, punishing students or giving them rewards for good behavior. Once the bureaucracy started the good teachers started leaving.
Now its a revolving door and a better chance of someone coming in that will not follow the rules. Before teachers would teach at the same school for 30 plus years, but those days are gone. Furthermore discipline at home, in high school and in college isn't what it used to be. So these new teachers are coming in with an immature and undisciplined mindset.
So the answer is no we can't trust them like we used to though abusive teachers are nothing new.
