I realize this might not be the greatest topic for a retro board, but I thought some of you fine folk could help me out with this.

So basically I'm due for an upgrade and I have been for quite some time. After checking my options, I noticed that AT&T is currently offering an online only deal where you can get the S4 or 5S for $99.99 w/ 2-year contract.

After being with the iPhone for about 4 years now, I'm honestly growing bored with the iPhone. iOS 7 didn't exactly do a lot to make me feel any different. Having said that, I'm a little anxious to switch over to the S4 due to having no experience with an Android device. So, at the risk of opening the 'Apple vs. Android' can of worms, which is the better phone? Is the iPhone 5S worth the upgrade or does the S4 blow it out of the water?

Just this last Christmas I made the switch from iPhone to Galaxy S4. Ios is definitely more intuitive and user friendly. Android works more like a PC and you can really tweak it if you're into that. There's some things I miss about iPhone but once I got past the Android learning curve I really like it.

The ability to customize is definitely something that's swaying me to the S4. Like I said, I'm just tired of iOS and the inability to have any sort of customization.

I've had the S4 since around the time it came out and I have no complaints, it works great. Sprint is my carrier, they're good but I wish they had a better hotspot package. They charge about 40 bucks and limit you to 5 GB per month.

I'm curious what kinds of things do you want to customize? I've looked into jailbreaking my iPhone, but when I've read about it, most of the stuff you can do I'm not sure why I would want.

I'm just interested in things like the widgets, ROMs, changing things on the homepage (icons, for example), and the ability to use something like Nova Launcher.

I agree with Steaks in that all the customizing of the layout seemed appetizing, when I really got down to it I didn't feel the need to have blue text instead of black. Not having to deal with itunes is a godsend though.

Yeah I moved from Iphone5 to a Galaxy S4. Since I had the s3 before and Inever had an Iphone, I figured I'd try it and I hated it so back to good old Android that I don't have to jailbreak to customise lol

My only gripe about the S4 is all the "source" stuff in plain view. Seeing percentages and how much ram my phone is using kind of stresses me out haha. I liked how on the iPhone kept all that stuff behind the curtains. I've come to ignore the overwhelming parts of Android and just use what I need. Another thing I always thought no way I want to lug that huge phone around, now I'd never go down to a smaller screen.

How durable are the S4's? I've heard and read everything from phones spontaneously burning to the plastic melting due to the heat of the battery.

Which, I'd buy a case for it regardless, but I suppose that wouldn't help if heat happened to be an issue.

It's alright. In some ways since it's plastic I feel it's a little more forgiving in a fall than the glass iPhone.
