After a long period of failing health, Nelson Mandela, former president and critical opponent of apartheid in South Africa, has died at the age of 95.

        Old news.

But yeah, it's sad about his death.

In other news, there's a sheriff in South Carolina who refuses to lower the American flag in honor of Mandela.

I don't see the issue with that. Mandela wasn't an American. It's not even a race issue to me, but it all depends on the Sheriff's reason.

In Canada the flags are half mast. Then again they did make him an honourary Canadian citizen.

I actually posted this shortly after his death on the same day. My second post came days later after the funeral arrangements.

I'm pretty sure I should feel bad about it, but holy hell did I laugh at this.

I'm sure people called him a racist for refusing to to so? Considering he some what supported communism and wasn't an American citizen I can see why the sheriff wouldn't want to.

There are two Nelson Mandela's, the man and the messiah.

Many of the people who have gotten in my face over Nelson are surprised when I remind them that Nelson Mandela as "Savior" was the creation of the South African government.

The list of names in the struggle against apartheid is miles long, some gave their lives in that struggle too. Nelson Mandela also became a target for government action, right along countless others, as South African authorities filled jails and prisons with people from all walks of life who would dare fight for equality.

By circumstance, Nelson Mandela became a convenient "catch-all" in a government campaign to break the ANC by destroying its leadership. Yet by singling out Nelson Mandela, South African authorities created a legend about him - a legend that grew the longer he stayed locked away.

By the 1990's world pressure and a change in government clearly revealed the end was near for apartheid.

The Nelson Mandela that emerged from Robben Island was a curious mix of the man and the legend. Now that we've reached the end of the year 2013, I hope many RJ users learn more about Nelson Mandela, the human being and let his international celebrity side take a well deserved rest.

You said it, Edd! I can't see how someone locked up for more than 25 years could be so relevant getting out. Spending that much time out of the loop has it's impact.
