I don't know how to explain, but is there a certain area or state in the USA where the general status quo (I mean values, laws, culture) reflects a different era like before the 2000s.

Is Texas one of them? I hear the south is prospering more and generally anti-PC and everything.

      Interesting thread!

hmmm, in terms of morals/politics/etc it's too hard for me to say. In terms of the vibe and fashion I'd say so. I'm from California but spend a lot of time on the east coast. In Ca, everyone is on top of fashion whereas here in PA I feel like a lot of people are wearing the same clothes for years on end.

Growing up there, I can safely say Alabama. Why? They're about 40-50 years behind the rest of the country, it seems. The 'town' I grew up in had one stop sign. At my parents house/around the area I grew up, they're only Internet option is dial-up.

I didn't mean "retro" in a bad way. I meant values like where parents didn't shelter their kids and those types of things.

Rural areas or smaller towns that don't have big box stores or six lane streets. Maybe the south is good for this though, where there is less inclement weather, and therefore less need to make new buildings and roads.

Not really any specific states. Norwalk CT, Ravenna OH, Utica IL, in very different ways all have fairly charming downtown areas with some of that old timey feel.

Prospering and "anti-PC" don't necessarily mean old-fashioned, I'm confused about that. Are you looking to move somewhere you'll like? For avoiding helicopter parents, the boonies is probably your best chance. Or Russia

I have not done much traveling lately so I can't say for sure. I do talk to people all over the country at work and people have not changed as much as one may think. Each region has its own accent and vibe. Honestly it isn't much different than it was 10 years ago though people seem like they have gotten a little nicer. Houston where I live is nothing like it was when I was a kid, but this is only because the racial makeup has changed. It's mostly Latino now and they are not much different than they were when I was a kid. If you go to the small town they have a timeless vibe.

So I would say the small towns in general are the most nostalgic especially in the south.

I have to agree, the southern states are pretty backward sometimes.
But, that doesn't mean I don't have any resentment for those states.
I freaking love the South. :)
