Thread: How can we bring back the 90s, 80s or 70s?

How do we bring back the quality tradition in popular culture that was from the beginning of pop culture up until when things started declining? It must have to do with starting at home first. The people are generally dumber too (Have you never saw the movie Idiocracy?). We need a new awakening.

I think a lot of the charm you're talking about came from obscurity. A zine from Boston would be hard to find in LA or maybe even New York. Now such a xeroxed booklet is a waste of time to produce or read.

Local affiliate TV stations had their own shows, instead of mostly just using syndicated content.

Books had to be sought, sometimes by interlibrary loan or special order.

Fast food was easily obtained from establishments that weren't chains or franchises.

Small towns had small stores, instead of no stores or Super Wall Mart.

When there are barriers to ideas getting around, they breed more ideas. Think of bacteria. They love to spread, but they need places to hide. A smooth surface is not as conducive to weird little permutations that might or might not expand, grow, or become known. The internet has smoothed out the roadway. Most assuredly, we have more information at our fingertips than ever. But there is more to consume, so people consume more and do less. And big companies have gotten bigger by utilizing various effects of keeping doors closed to individuals, crushing or buying out other companies, cutting costs and stifling innovation.

There's definitely a knowledge trade off.

For instance, just look at computer literacy in the 90's haha. Not every home had a computer, and basic concepts such as e-mail and URL's were alien to most folks.

On the other hand, we're losing the complexities of our language. Take a novel or letter from the early 20th century and it's astonishing how beautifully written there are. Even today, writers would be hard pressed to replicate their exquisite use of language.

Research shows that IQ increases with each new generation but it's easy to think otherwise when people screw up basic facts like geography and science concepts.

I think we're on the verge of a new era of creativity in which reality tV and canned blockbusters will no longer cut it with folks.

The possible problem with Echinda's idea is, how do you know the powers that be in creative stuff (writers and producers) want to even listen to their public anymore? Maybe that's what we're seeing.

And as for the intelligence of society, someday this one guy's blog opinion thinks high school and colleges will sacrifice reliable information for Wikipedia. I guess investing in technology sometimes has a knowledge trade-off.

There's always the possibility of importing animated hits from other countries and adapting them to English standards. Some local cartoons may be good enough to air on TV, as well as the animes of Japan that were never released in English。

This show, in particular, was famous all over the world, especially in Europe in the 80's-90's, where it even inspired some famous soccer players. However, it never got an English American release. They could target this at little kids and their soccermoms, but I'm not sure how well it would do, given how not mainstream soccer is in the USA.

I think those days are long gone. I'm sure even the 90s seemed so strange to those that remember the 80s and the 80s seemed strange to those that remembered the 70s. I think people tend to associate the best days usually from their youth. No matter what we do we can't bring back a culture to where it once was.
