Me too. I wanted to get on the internet and didn't have the money for real a computer. So in 1996 I got WebTv. It wasn't too bad, but the lack of Java applets, Real Player and being able to install programs made me want a computer. In 1998 I got my first computer which was a 300 MHz Compaq Presario 5010. I paid just over $2000 for it.

When I first got online back in 1996 the first website I went to was weather.com. I was into weather back then and used to see it advertized on The Weather Channel. The next website I went to was Yahoo. I used to hang out on a website called The Globe where I made my first webpage, but it shut down a couple of years later.

One thing I can tell you about the internet back then is it had a more matured, more intelligent crowd. Back then the average person wasn't on the internet. You didn't have the trolls and haters like you do today.

People thought the world would end because Windows 95 could only go up to 1999.

GameFAQS is what the internet for me in the late 90s was all about. I think that's the only time I used the internet is to go on GameFAQS and I still do that today.

I also got a Webtv in 1996 because my sister took the PC to college with her so I was devastated at losing the internet LOL. But I remember mostly just using it for websurfing, chatrooms, and newsgroups. Newsgroups...predecessors to these types of messageboards!

So was Excite,Netscape and Infoseek (now go.com). Altavista gained ground until Google came in and put them all to shame.

I remember using AOL until we got the first phone bill lol and switched to a local provider. Internet of Maine or ime. I remember when we first got it the website was so so basic ( as we're most)and they would add pumpkins and Christmas tree graphics as well as midi files during the holidays when you'd first log on.

The very first chat room I found after aol bs was cybersnaxx talk time. I think it was sponsored by Humpty Dumpty chips or something. I remember avatars coukd be Madonna or William Shakespeare but I can't remember who else. ( this was 97 by the way)you kept having to manually refresh the page. I can't even imagine how long it took considering how impatient we get these days with even high speed lol <--- I also immediatly picked up a "lol" habit to this day I have issues breaking.

I remember ppl having very basic home pages like geocities. I was introduced to tribal voices powwow, a downloadable chat program. Then when that died out, icq, irc and Aim, as well as yahoo groups. I've had the same hotmail address since probobly 98 or 99. 0ne of the more interesting pages I first found way back then was find a grave and find a death. I still visit those pages every now and then.

I remember our schools first website was so basic it was pretty much just a list of email addresses. These days it's like some fancy interactive brochure.

I remember using excite, and someone saying google was better. I was like wtf is that?!

Search engines...I liked hotbot for a while. Then there was dogpile.com, which would query 37 other search engines and compile their results.

I remember going to a site called dragoonmoonx which was a perverted hentai site for DBZ and Sailor Moon. I was struggling with puberty at the time..
