It wasn't too bad, but the lack of Java applets, Real Player and being able to install programs made me want a computer. In 1998 I got my first computer which was a 300 MHz Compaq Presario 5010. I paid just over $2000 for it. When I first got online back in 1996 the first website I went to was weather.com. I was into weather back then and used to see it advertized on The Weather Channel. The next website I went to was Yahoo. I used to hang out on a website called The Globe where I made my first webpage, but it shut down a couple of years later. One thing I can tell you about the internet back then is it had a more matured, more intelligent crowd. Back then the average person wasn't on the internet. You didn't have the trolls and haters like you do today.

But I remember mostly just using it for websurfing, chatrooms, and newsgroups. Newsgroups...predecessors to these types of messageboards!

I remember when we first got it the website was so so basic ( as we're most)and they would add pumpkins and Christmas tree graphics as well as midi files during the holidays when you'd first log on. The very first chat room I found after aol bs was cybersnaxx talk time. I think it was sponsored by Humpty Dumpty chips or something. I remember avatars coukd be Madonna or William Shakespeare but I can't remember who else. ( this was 97 by the way)you kept having to manually refresh the page. I can't even imagine how long it took considering how impatient we get these days with even high speed lol
