So I'm turning 41 today,I'm officially on "the other side". Nothing but Metamucil from here on... :D

But seriously (or not),while reminiscing with my sisters about all the birthday parties that I had as a little kid there is one memory that has always stuck with me. On my fifth or sixth birthday one of my sisters gave me a Mickey Mouse coloring book that was was called Mickey's Birthday or something like that. In the book Mickey goes to the movies on the afternoon before his birthday party and he gets a tommyache from eating too much popcorn and soda. Well,in a case of absolute serendipity,THE EXACT SAME THING happened to me that day. My aunt Giselle -who loved to spoil the crap out of us- took me and my brother to a matinee (I think it was one of those awful Doug MacClure dinosaur flicks) and I ate a whole big bucket of popcorn,a Milky Way and who knows how many sodas. When we got home everyone yelled SURPRISE! and my Mum was waiting for me with this huge Western-themed cake...that I couldn't enjoy because my stomach hurt like Hell. Never been a fan of popcorn or overeating since them...

How about you? Anything particularly funny or corky happened in one of your childhood b-days?

I remember my 11th birthday in September 1975, when my parents took me and my friend next door, who was a couple of years younger than me, to a Howard Johnson's restaurant for dinner. It was his first time ever eating at a restaurant and when the waitress came to our table to take our order, he expected the food at that instant, not knowing they had to prepare it first! If I remember correctly, he and I both had a cheeseburger platter. THEN, after he finished his burger, he was still hungry wanted another one, so my parents ordered him another burger...but then he couldn't finish it after taking a couple of bites, which sort of annoyed my parents, making them say that "his eyes are bigger than his belly".

        41? Man, that's old!

Happy birthday, grandpa! Just kidding. ;)

        I hope you're having a good b-day.

Aren't Howard Johnson Restaurants pretty much gone except for maybe Maine?

Yes. I don't know of any Howard Johnson's restaurants in my area now. The building that once housed the Howard Johnson's my parents took me and my next door neighbor to on my 11th birthday is still there (in Delaware), but is currently vacant. It housed another restaurant since Howard Johnson's closed before it became vacant. However, there are still Howard Johnson's motels/hotels, but I believe they are connected to another motel/hotel chain.

(sigh) Boy do I miss the old Howard Johnsons. Not that many plaves left where you could order a giant 15 ball ice cream dish...

Sorry I don't have any stories. My parents never made a big deal out of birthdays. I always got a cheap gift, maybe a cake and a "Happy Birthday". I see kids today getting an Xbox and it makes me feel deprived. I had a couple of parties when I was a little kid, but none as I got older.

If I was lucky, I got to have my party hosted at McDonalds. They used to set up games and party favors. Somewhere, there's a home video of one (must have been 1990) with my neighborhood buddies are on the play area and all my gifts were Batman.
