I remembered when seeing Tommy's gums white in an episode from 1991. It scared me.

The animation was crude and the kids and parents were really weird. I say it was a screwed up and scary series to begin with. Looking back I'm sure there was a bunch of stuff in the subject matter that kids wouldn't really understand and the subject matter would be better appreciated by someone older. I guess the same can be said about many cartoons. Watching Simpsons episodes again I realize just how little of the subject matter I understood in some episodes but I didn't care and I would overlook it because I was into the characters, animation and occasional funny moments to care. Today I can really see the nuances that I totally missed back then.

"The Simpsons" started out with pretty crude animation too.
