Ok so last week the whole medianet was abuzz over the Game of Thrones' Red Wedding episode. Everybody was calling it the most shocking moment in Television History. I personally wasn't shocked because I had read the book years ago (my wife did cringed, though) and I got thinking "was it really the most shocking?" And I started to make a slow mental recollection of all the moments in television that impacted me.
All in the Family
I still can't believe this aired in the early 70s (I saw it in 80s when TBS would rerun it all the time). Sweet, innocent Edith Bunker almost gets raped in her own house. Edith, in her unrelenting innocence, tries to cite her advanced aged and marital status as reasons that she would be an unacceptable rape victim. Her creep-ass captor simply replies that he enjoys older women and that he is married himself. Holy shit! Talk about an out of left field story for a sitcom!
This one is shocking in retrospective. I'm surpised to find a Youtube clip of this episode. The ownwe of a bike shop who is really a creep-o child molester is after Willis and Arnold and not only does he shows photos of him naked to the brothers,he gets them to pose shirtless and even gives Arnold alcohol. Not only that, later in the episode Arnold tells Mr. Drummond about what's been happening, and the police arrive at the bike shop just in time to find a drugged up, half-naked Dudley sprawled out and Mr. Horton doing a few warm-up stretches in preparation for some vigorous child abuse.
But that wasn't the on;y episode of Diff'rent Strokes with a completely out-of-left-field moment. How about the time when Arnold's friend Sam is kidnapped by a guy who wants him to replace his dead son. When Sam objects about the two-hour drive, the kidnapper flatout tells Sam he will kill his parents if he doesn't cooperate. The man introduces Sam to the rest of the family and, just like in Texas Chainsaw Massacre, it turns out they're all crazy.
You may argue "Well, those are old TV shows and TV is different now" and that maybe true. But that doesn't lessens the general WTF-ness of these moments. With that said the most shocking moment to me in recent times to me was the death of Omar in The Wire:
How about you? Any old TV episode that rocked your senses?
You went off-topic first by saying Laddersnake and you won't even tell me what it means?
I'm done with you.
and again, to keep in tone of the thread. Another Fresh Prince clip
It's odd how you would tell someone to "do it Laddersnake" and then tell them that you're done with them if they don't know what it means. Is Laddersnake a new craze or something? I honestly haven't heard of it.
On the final episode of MASH, a hospital rescue team retrieved some wounded soldiers along with South Korean refugees. They all had to keep quiet so as not to be detected by a North Korean patrol that was near by.
Hawkeye yells at a young woman to keep her baby quite. After the North Korean patrol left the area Hawkeye discovers, to his horror, that the woman smothered the baby to keep it from crying.
It still shakes me to think about it after all of these years.
