eddstarr88 1 year 5 months ago Posts: 6887	I've never had a real Egg Cream soda but I did get caught up in the east coast "chocolate soda" craze of the late 50's/early 60's. My parents generation loved the New York style Egg Cream because it was the last of the ol' drug store soda fountain hit drinks before the rise of the milkshake. Some of you might remember that Jean Stapleton as "Edith Bunker" mentioned the Egg Cream when she was telling the story of how she and "Archie" first became steady friends, despite cousin Maude's disapproval. The secret of a perfect Chocolate Egg Cream soda is to carefully stir in the chocolate syrup LAST, that way the foam on top stays white. That's how the drink got its name! Never drink an Egg Cream with a straw, that's a no-no. The rise of the hamburger joint with milkshakes in the 60's seems to have made the Egg Cream soda an east coast treat only. That's a shame cuz the calorie and fat count of a milkshake are far higher.

bklynbren 1 year 5 months ago Posts: 868	Now that I think back, that store in my neighborhood did have an old drug store soda fountain feel to it. The name of the store was in fact "Egg Cream", located in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn. There's a place in downtown Brooklyn called Juniors Cheesecake that still has egg cream on the menu, I didn't catch it in time to order one through.

It seems to me that 1963 was the year that fast-food chains and the rise of 7-11 stores began to change the habits of kids and teens. Bottled chocolate drinks, carbonated and non-carbonated, were easily available in grocery stores up until the mid-70's where I lived. These drinks were no substitute for the real soda fountain originals.

When I read the thread title I thought it was going to be about the cadbury cream eggs that come out during easter. I think I may to to the store for some ingredients later on.

By carefully easing the chocolate syrup in last and not upsetting the milk foam on top, the drink does appear to have an egg white "meringue-like" topping.

I think I've made it with cream soda before; the Mr. Softy trucks sometimes used Coke or Pepsi. I once made a Butter Pecan Ice Cream and Orange pop float. and well.... No sir, I didn't like it.
