I thought she's been dead. Anyway, this is sad news.

Well she died on the show Archie Bunker's Place between season 1 and season 2. Maybe that was why you though she was already dead.

On a side note she played a dinging submissive wife on the show, but in real life she was activity involved in women's rights. Likewise Carroll O'Connor was very liberal in real life. Just goes to show what great actors they were.

Yeah, I know she died on Archie Bunker's Place, but I thought she's been dead in real life.

Edith Bunker was a great character. One Edith moment I like was when she stood up to Archie in Edith Breaks Out.

"I thought she was already dead" was also my initial thought.

Having said that, All in the Family is one of my all-time favorite shows and she was terrific on it. RIP.

Thank you for your singing voice, Edith.

Jean Stapleton and Carroll O'Connor did such a great job with the intro song, (I heard that it was recorded in December 1970 after CBS agreed to air the entire 1st season episodes for 1971), it came as a surprise to me when the intro was revised a couple more times during the show's production run.

I still like the original intro the best. Jean Stapleton did not "throw" her voice in the same exaggerated way compared to the later versions:

For Jean Stapleton it was Broadway that made her a star. She fell in love with live theater at an early age. But just like Angela Lansbury in "Murder, She Wrote"; Jean Stapleton became truly famous from her role in a TV show.

For all the years that "All In The Family" aired I was only an occasional fan, wondering in and out of each season catching a few episodes. Because I took the show for granted it came as a bit of a shock when I realized how much the show depended on Gloria and Mike.

Jean Stapleton and Carroll O'Connor are 1st class actors, but the show itself needed the characters by Sally Struthers and Rob Reiner to hold it all together, imho.

That was made clear by what I consider the best episode of the entire series. From 1978, "The Stivics Go West", this episode really struck home with viewers. It touched me to the point that I couldn't watch the show after Mike and Gloria left.

This clip is a little long but notice how Jean Stapleton is so outstanding as Edith that she and Carroll O'Connor "Live" their characters.

                    Rest In Peace Jean Stapleton

The Eldorado is dead. Long live the Eldorado.

Something people may not know about her. She comes from an acting family, And although she started her acting career at age 18, she didn't become well known for another 32 years when she got the role as Edith Bunker. Dispite having roles on hit shows such as Car 54 where are you, Dennis The Menace and My Three Sons.

She caught the eye of Carroll O'Connor when she played his wife on an episode of The Defenders in 1962. It was him who pitched the idea of her playing Edith in All in the Family, The role which made her a star. If you want to look up a reunion between the two actors it's on youtube.

I watched a video on YouTube of Carroll and Jean on Donny and Marie's talk show. It was taped in 2000. I'm assuming that's what you're talking about.
