C'mon guys get out of the zone and read how stupid this discussion has become. A date or year is how you perceive it. If you lived in a small town things were probably a little more behind than what they would be in a larger metropolitan area. It all has to do with your experiences. When I traveled across the USA to New York back in 2001 a lot of towns I visited were still stuck in the 80s. Do you think they saw the subtle differences between 1997 and 1998? I live in Houston (4th largest US city)and the two were pretty much the same. With each year the vibe, styles and trends gradually faded.
Digital cell phones launched in Houston in 1997 and by the early 2000s most young people seemed to owned one. Before that most young people had pagers as analog cell phone air time was too expensive. It was a gradual transition. Most people didn't own a computer in 1997 or 1998 because they were so expensive. They didn't become affordable until the early 2000s. Trust me I know as it was a big part of my life back then.
Digital media didn't gain popularity until Napster launched in 1999 and the iPod launched in 2001. Again most people were out of the loop with computer until the early 2000s.
Certain films set the tone in 1997. Men in Back, Titanic and the Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition are three that comes to mind. The same with music and a few TV shows. Outside of music, moves, some TV shows and current events there wasn't a major difference. Remember though that this is the case with every year.
So stop already
