In my opinion, it was 1996. Here's why:

    - The internet was not really that "big" until 1997.
    - Jeopardy still had their 1992 intro song and the 1960s think theme.
    - COPS still had their old logo. Changed in '97.
    - In 1996, grunge was still very popular. In the late '90s and early 2000s, you had boy bands and people like Britney Spears.
    - 1996 and 1998 comparisons of a Ford F-150:

1997 and any year after just doesn't seem the same as 1996 and earlier.

I'd say 2002. I really liked the late 90's/early 2000's. Sure the music was crap, but I have a lot of great memories of that time period. At least the economy was much better and it seemed people were much more happier then people are today.

        2000.
The Twin Towers were still standing and the economy was still booming in the USA.

There is a battle between two wolves inside us all.

One is evil and the other one is good. Which wolf will win? The one you feed the most.

I'd slide it over at least a year.

                * 1998 isn't 1997, and I think you might be confusing 1997 with 1998
                * Grunge and some bands typically associated with the 90s still had some prescence in 1997 (Soundgarden, Faith No More) and Britney Spears wasn't the teen superstar until 1998.

1998 may not be fully retro yet, but 1997 must be.

                  What does this statement mean? 1998 isn't 1997 isn't 1996 isn't 1995 isn't 1994. No year is another year. You might as well say 2 isn't 3.

Is that because the end of 1998 isn't 15 full years old yet...?

Using the Britney Spears as an example, confusing the two years is a mistake that someone might make. The end of 1998 may not be fully retro because of many circumstances, not just the number of years old it is.

To call someone "confused" or "mistaken" simply because their opinion is different from yours is extremely disrespectful.

I said it's a mistake they MIGHT make. Also, if you're so concerned about respect, why not practice what you preach?

Calling it a mistake, same thing.

I do practice what I preach. I respect people who deserve it. Everybody deserves it until they show otherwise.

You're assuming I don't know definitions - kind of ignorant of my knowledge in this subject, no? Let me travel back to 1997...

There was no Nokia 3210 in 1998.

                                  Nor iPod.

                                  Nor WWTBAM, except in UK.

Nor dead Layne Staley, nor dead George Harrison (and neither had significant impact on the cultural zeitgeist in the years they did die, or 1997.)

Windows 98 was not as big a deal or computer interface change as Windows 95.

Absolutely none of what you said shows that 1997 and 1998 were very different.

Since your IQ apparently can't figure it out, there's a lot of things I could/couldn't do in 1997 that I can't/can do today. A lot has changed since 1997 and if you had a decent IQ, you would know that those were examples.

again with the IQ points? do you have any other reply? first off I'm not calling you stupid. just your thought processes towards certain things. There's a big difference. Secondly nothing you stated has anything to do with what the word retro actually means. I could sit here and spell it out for you that what your saying has nothing to do with the topic at hand but apparently it is you who lacks the brain functions to actually see that.

                                        What does this statement mean? 1998 isn't 1997 isn't 1996 isn't 1995 isn't 1994. No year is another year. You might as well say 2 isn't 3.

Is that because the end of 1998 isn't 15 full years old yet...?

                                        Literally?: Yes, 1998 is retro.
                                        Culturally?: No.

                                          I didn't say 1998 was fully retro.
