    		 According to their strictest definition, dumb means unable to talk and lame means unable to walk. Why aren't people crying for them to be banned in public usage too? They are both used as an insult and they are still used to refer to the conditions in some cases in literature.

    Isn't it a bit like saying "let's protect the mentally challenged, but screw the mute and crippled"?

            		 There are other words like dumb and lame. Such as moron and idiot.

            Thinking about those words, I think "retarded" offends people because it became used in the vernacular as a derogatory word before it was fully obsolete as a legit medical term.

                		 My brother is mentally challenged and had to endure being called a retard for years. He isn't classified as being retarded, but you know how kids can be. As with anything its all about context. Just trying to ban a word is silly. This includes the others that people want to ban. I won't list them because people have been banned here for using them.

                BTW when did the world "cunt" get banned? I know it demeans women, but calling it "the C world" is just retarded......I mean "the R world".

                  Read the John Franklin Stephens letter about the word "retarded". That explains it pretty well. What he says is basically, don't use this word that describes me, as an insult.

                  I remember hearing about how offensive "cunt" is...well, it might have been around 2007. That's when 30 Rock had an episode all about it. I've never watched that show but the time frame seems about right.

                  I don't quite get it either. I fully understand Tina Fey's experience and that she was upset. But for everybody to take that on seems strange. "Cunt" is a body part. It's the same as calling somebody "prick", "dick", "asshole", "pussy", whatever. If "cunt" is not allowed, I don't see why whatever rule this is doesn't apply to any of those other words. I try to avoid using those words as insults, because the underwear area rules. Especially pussies. If somebody is being a wuss, weak, lily-livered coward, why would I want to say, "You are the most awesome thing in the world"?

                  IMO "bitch" is much worse. Used as an insult, it implies that to be a woman is to be a lesser animal and to be a woman is bad. It can be reclaimed, though, which is great.
