Besides sequel movies like Aliens (1986) and Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) and Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) and Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan (1982), in my opinion, there are three REALLY GREAT movie sequels in the annals of Hollywood film-making:

    A) Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather, Part II (1974)

    B) Irwin Kershner's Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

    and

    C) The Dark Knight (2008), which is Christopher Nolan's ambitious sequel to Batman Begins (2005)

So I am asking you guys, what made these three really great film sequels in the annals of Hollywood film-making that I am talking about REALLY GREAT?

      Writing?

I'm glad there's somebody out there that appreciates The Godfather, Part II as much as I do.

One is evil and the other one is good. Which wolf will win? The one you feed the most.

I believe Return of the King is one of the only sequels to earn the Best Film Oscar, along with 9 or 10 other categories.

Godfather and Dark Knight on a list of great movie sequels? That makes about as much sense as people still liking Obama.

The Hellraiser sequels were pretty good, I also enjoyed Friday the 13th and Jason sequels more than their originals.

I agree on Godfather II and The Empire Strikes Back, but not The Dark Knight. I think it's a really good movie, but not up there with those two in my opinion. I'd personally put From Russia With Love, Dawn Of The Dead and Superman II (as well as Star Trek II and Aliens from the honorable mentions) ahead of The Dark Knight. And maybe more, but those are just some of my favorite sequels that come to mind.
