I'm about to buy a new phone from Verizon. I want to get the iPhone 5 16 gig. I've avoided smart phones in the past because you have to pay for a data plan. It looks like with Verizon it will add about $30 to my bill making it around $85 a month. Do you think the iPhone 5 is a good choice? I'm not sure what discounts I'll get, but the regular price is $650.

I had a huge dilemma when getting my first smart phone last year. Kind of odd I stressed over what model to get since I was using a super basic phone for years. I had it narrowed down between the iphone and the Samsung Galaxy but ultimately got the iPhone, and really happy with it. Itunes is a joke, but overall I love the super intuitive layout. Plus with 90% of people using iPhones, finding solutions to problems is always easy and you can always count on finding a part for your phone at just about any store.

The price across the board won't change much. I joined my sister's family plan and only pay 40.00 a month with the 3GB data plan.

Like you bassman I avoided getting a smart phone (even though I wanted one) due to the cost of data plans. I asked many providers if I could just get a smart phone, even if it wasn't an iPhone, with talk and text, no data. I was even willing to buy the phone full price, unsubsidized. They all said it was impossible. Even if I would buy the phone elsewhere and bring it to them.

While waiting I would frequently ask to see friends' phones, so I could check out the options. With touchscreens and physical keyboards, Android or Windows, none seemed to be as easy or intuitive to use as a iPhone.

I've been using a dumb phone with Virgin Mobile. About two months ago, I noticed I can get a iPhone with them for $30 a month. I got a iPhone 4 for $350. Exactly what I wanted. OK, I was hoping for more like $20 a month, but still, a lot better than 85. With that I get 300 minutes (which I'll never come close to using) and unlimited text and data.

I have an iPad Touch and overall like the iOS software. I don't like the limitations of it, but jailbreaking fixes some of this. I agree iTunes sucks and it makes transferring music annoying. I don't plan on using the phone for music much so it doesn't really matter.

Its down to the Galaxy S4 and the iPhone 5. Both are great phones, but I like the quality of the casing of the iPhone. I also like that its a little smaller which will be easier to keep in my pocket. I don't like that there is no SD slot and you can't use a mini USB on the iPhone. The lighting adapter on the iPhone 5 is pretty cool though.

For support the iPhone wins. There are so many apps and so much tech help readily available. Also as Vkimo stated parts and accessories are readily available. If you crack the screen you can get a replacement online and find videos to help you replace it yourself.

As for Verizon they are the best service out there IMHO. Here in Houston they are rated #1 in coverage. They were one of the only providers to work during hurricane Ike too. I like CDMA better than GSM(TDMA) which T Mobile and AT&T use. CDMA can talk on more than one tower at the same time which results in fewer dropped calls when handing off to another tower. CDMA also doesn't interfere with electronics like GSM does. Sprint uses there own flavor of CDMA, but tends to not work too well inside buildings around here. Verizon cost more, but its a overall better service where I live. I must say you can't beat Virgin Mobile for price which uses Sprints towers. Unfortunately I have a year left on my contract with Verizon so I couldn't leave without paying even if I wanted to.

If you are a new smartphone user then the Iphone 5 is def a good choice for you. iPhones are designed to be simplistic yet extremely functional. They are also very reliable. Androids are more flexible out of the box, but also prone to crashing and lockups, plus with so many different types of android phones it is common to run into app compatibility problems. That being said the last time I owned an android phone was about 2.5 years ago and Im sure they have improved somewhat by then, but the iPhone is just consistently reliable.

I ended up ordering the iPhone 5 from Apple directly for $199. Both phones are overall a draw, but there were a few things I like about the iPhone. For one the iPhone is louder using the phone speakers. I have issues even on my laptop hearing some videos and don't want to have to deal with it on my phone too. Another was the size. The iPhone just feels better in my hands and feels more durable. The better camera and compatibility were also taking into account. Some apps even though they are written for android don't always work with every device. With Apple they are more universal. Both are good phones, but the iPhone just felt like the better choice. I have 30 days to see how I like it so we'll see.

We'll probably see an iPhone 5s soon.

Each new phone I get has features that I don't really use. I think I'm a tech sissy.

The cool thing about smart phones is there are multiple apps for just about anything. Want a bar-code scanner to see if you can buy something cheaper online while shopping? There are apps that do that.

I don't think its going to sell like the 4s did. Many people were let down that they released the 4s and the 5 so close together.

So, let's talk about apps, what you got? Say what platform you have. (Android, Windows phone, iphone) As mentioned, I have iphone.

                        Titan TV
                        best TV listings I've found.

                        Photosynth
I have iphone 4, so Apple's camera app won't do the panorama thing like in the commercial. This is a pretty good substitute.

                        5-0 Radio
Police scanner, and you can get feeds from all over the place.

                        GAMES

                        Ruzzle
Of all the word games out there, this one entertains me the most. A 4x4 board of letter tiles, some have mutipliers (like Scrabble). Find as many words as you can in two minutes for the highest score. Practice mode by yourself or play against an opponent in three round matches.

                        Silent Age
Nice point and click type adventure game involving time travel. Clean graphics, gorgeous and subtle sound, interesting story, and puzzles that are not too easy or too hard to figure out. Coming soon to Android and they are looking for beta testers. I finished part one, and part two is also forthcoming.

                        Pac-Sam
Pacman combined with Galaga and Asteroids.

LOL As I stated I already got the iPhone 5 and I'm very pleased with it. No lockups, random rebooting or anything like that. I screwed up though when I got the phone. I installed iOS 6.1.3 which prevents Jailbreaking. The evad3rs group said they are going to wait for a major release like iOS 7 before releasing another Jailbreak. There reason is they don't want Apple to close the exploit and then have to find another one when iOS 7 comes out. It might be for the better as Jailbreaking can really slow the phone down and cause crashes.

I'm really impressed with the S4, but went with the iPhone because of its smaller size. Both are great devices. The issue with Samsung is they tend to forget about their older products once the new ones come out. Apple has much better support.
