I seem to remember an episode from a show like this from the late 80s that was short-lived. The format was similar to that of Our House, a one-hour family drama. I remember a scene from this episode where the boy is sitting in a chair, alone in a dark room thinking about the holocaust, and what the old lady went through, and his Grandpa comes over and talks to him about it. This may not be the show you are thinking of, but I also can't remember the name of the show.
