Happy 2013 to all my friends on Retro junk.
Here is an an for Volkswagen that might be the best ad they ever aired on television, but it has many levels of meaning.
Volkswagen's "1949 Auto Show" Ad...
This ad first aired in 1969 to celebrate Volkswagen's 20th anniversary in the American car market since it's intro back in 1949 - when it sold just 2 cars in the USA that year. By 1969, VW was a cultural icon in the USA and around the world.
But this ads greatest twist are the cars highlighted in the ad itself. Every car company mentioned in the "1949 Auto Show ad" was extinct by 1969, with the exception of the porthole sided Buick - but note that "Buick" was not mentioned by name.
Another great feature of this ad is the appearance of game show host Wink Martindale for DeSoto, while McLane Stevenson is the spokesman for Packard.
Notice how the Volkswagen spokesman states the advantages of VW engineering over hype as he stands alone, un-noticed by the crowds around the glitzy displays for all those car companies that went out of business!
