Have you ever wanted to go on a long vacation and take a road trip down from Canada all the way to Chile/Brazil/Argentina/etc? What a journey that would be, encountering so many people, cultures, sceneries, and places. Have you ever wanted to do this all by car?

Too bad, you can't. There is an undeveloped strip between Panama and Columbia called the Darien Gap. It is occupied by marshland and forests, with several aboriginal reserves. Currently, there is NO road crossing it, and there is little will to build one. The environment is very sensitive, and there is ongoing guerrilla warfare. The only way across by car is to ship your car across and to take a flight to Columbia. A ferry service used to exist to carry people across from Panama, but it was shut down in 1997.

There goes my dreams of driving all the way to South America.

I just want to go to a desert island, relax under a blue cloudless sky on a warm day, feel the gentle breeze, listen to the waves and seagulls and try not to worry about city life.

One is evil and the other one is good. Which wolf will win? The one you feed the most.

there are private boat services that are available to cross the darien gap by sea still not driving but much cheaper than a flight, I've never been personally but have read a lot of travel blogs and have seen that many people choose to hire a boat to get from Central to South America since it is so much cheaper (I'm currently saving money so i can ditch my job and travel through Central America for at least a year, I'm still a ways off but I'm hoping to leave next year about this time or in early 2014) best of luck on your travels.

I drove from Canada to the Florida Keys last year and it was one of the best times of my entire life so just because you can't get all the way to South America theres still a lot of fun to be had. Road trips are great!
