I'm looking for the name of a christmas special, it's a stop motion animation about the life of Santa Claus (from when he's a baby til when he's grown up) but it's really strange, he was adopted as a baby by like fairies or something and eventually fights these monsters and a bad guy who was a warlock i think, it was really bizarre does anyone remember this at all. Also for timing i'd say I saw it around mid to late 80's.

That's an easy one. The life & adventures of santa claus.

It's based on a book by the same guy who wrote the wizard of oz, and the special was made by rankin & bass, famous for so many classic holiday specials.

I'm very familiar with the old rankin & bass specials, and other holiday specials from that era. I would watch them religously when I was a kid. On top of that, this particular one always stood out for being SOOOOOOO different from every other santa claus story. As soon as I saw "stop motion" "life of santa" and "strange xmas special", I knew what it was, even before seeing the part about fairies & monsters.

It can be a little confusing though, because there was also "santa claus is coming to town", also by rankin/bass, also stop motion, which likewise tells the origin of santa, also with an evil wizard & an unusually dark look & feel to most of it. It doesn't have the fairies/monsters aspect though & is generally much more conventional.

trivia tidbit: The original thundercats cartoon was also made by rankin/bass, and if you pay attention to the 2011 thundercats cartoon, you can hear a reference to this fact. In one of the later episodes the thunderkittens find a magic sack, the magical phrase to activate the sack is "rankinbass" (pronounced "rah-kinbahss" in the show).

There's also a cartoon version from 2000, a planned but apparently cancelled one from 2010, and an anime (unfortunately untranslated, not even fansubs) from 1996.
...And of course the original novel Which has since fallen into the public domain & can now be freely downloaded from project gutenberg & other such sites.
