Never lost power- very little damage in my town, but after 2 major storms and a tornado, I would expect as much. All the trees causing the damage over the last few years are pretty much gone. Still many many places without power, but emergency crews have been doing an awesome job restoring power and rescuing people trapped on the coast. And our leaders in the tri-state area have been doing great. I really wish the leadership we have now was available during Katrina, the emergency recovery is going to be fast in comparison, and the death toll is quite low. The long-term recovery is going to be tough, though. The entire NJ shore was destroyed, along with downtown Manhattan where a lot of my friends live. You can all help out by donating to the local causes!

Here over in Erie around the lake. There was no observance of any mass doom or injury AFAIK. Just winds and some damage.

What pisses me off is they stopped reporting on Ike in 2008 a few days after the storm, even though 100s were killed. But when its NYC or when they can fire people up about alleged racism (Katrina) they will report on it for weeks on end.

I know is ridiculous. Now prepare yourself for another griefxploitation next week... if you know what I mean. If not I suggest spam blocking and a couple of handkerchiefs to hand it over.

Sandy is nothing to scoff at. Over 100 people have died so far in the US alone and they're predicting it may be one of the most costly storms in US history, so of course I expect them to make a big deal out of it- once it goes away from the media, people forget about it and stop donating time and money to the cause. Thousands of people are still homeless and/or without power right now. The problems don't go away because it stops appearing in the news. If you don't like watching sad things, don't watch TV.

And as far as Katrina goes, almost 2k people died as a result of poor planning and emergency evacuation. They were correct in surmising that it was a discrimination issue, but mainly due to poverty rather than race. It was because of the outrage and media coverage that hurricane preparedness has changed for the better.

Let's lay off on the doomsday talk, this is about the hurricane.

On that note, looks like a nor'easter is coming in this week and might even make things worse.

Living in the southeast of Ontario, I got touched by the storm, but not nearly to the extent our friends in the USA did. I didn't have too much of an issue with power and electricity, but we had some flooding issues.

Man, the folks in the Northeast had it bad. Still do! When will it all end?

The folks on Rockaway Peninsula seem to have been forgotten. Far too many of them will need to be permanently relocated, They Have Lost Everything.

All the talk about staying in a hotel or school gym until the Red Cross can reach them has to stop. These folks are well beyond that kind of help. Looks like entire neighborhoods need to be reconstructed. Rockaway needs a total rethink. Some areas will never be rebuilt!

So, we got dumped with a foot of snow here on top of everything. My school system was the only one on the coast that did not have early dismissal or cancel classes the next day. That was the worst commute ever! So many accidents because they were ironically unprepared! AND they had to move Halloween back AGAIN in that town. The kids did trick or treating yesterday, 11/10/12! Oy!
