Since there are not a lot of posts around lately, just thought i'd share something random and possibly lame. I have a Barnes and Noble Nook, which I looove, and I was searching the book store on it and i'd put in something like "A day no pig would die", which we had to read in fifth grade, and it would pop up similar titles/authors/books from that time period and basicly after clicking through each one I found a bunch of titles that I had forgotten having read until I saw them that second. It was a great little trip down memory lane. It reminded me that we read (in 5th and 6th grade) The Cay, The Achorn People, Island Of The Blue Dolphins, Acrossed Five Aprils (actually that may have been 7th grade), Travels With Charlie, The Black Pearl, etc. I remember most things from back then but some of these books, I can't remember for the life of me their plots.
    :)

We never -had- to read any books in grade school. We -had- to check out at least one book from the library every week, and they would usually read part of some books during library class (hoping to get us hooked enough to -want- to read the rest ourselves), but we never HAD to read any.

One book that I recall them partly reading to us, which I eventually decided to read myself, was the phantom tollbooth.

WE had library once a week where we COULD borrow a book to take home. But in the actual classroom we had a good selection of books that we would also borrow on a weekly basis that we HAD to read as part of our homework.

When I was in year 1 or 2, there was a book called After School, I can't remember the author.

The only mandatory reading was textbooks assignments. Library books were always for personal enjoyment back in my grade school days.

                Grade three: Charlotte's Web
Grade four: Ticket to Curlew, Stone Fox
Grade five: A Wrinkle in Time, The Secret Garden, How to Eat Fried Worms and we didn't just read the book we also did the play too. I envied those kids who got to eat all those gummy worms.
Grade six: Underground to Canada, and another one about a man who travels to a village in a hot air balloon
                Grade seven: The Hiding Place
And in either grade seven or eight I had to read the book I am David.

I think I used the reader in 3rd and 4th grade.

In 5th grade we read a new book every month. They would usually give us broad topics to pick from. It would be like insects and mammals. The names were picked randomly, so if there was a popular topic and you got called last you were screwed.

We read James and the Giant Peach this was before the movie came out, Castle in the Attic, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, Ben and Me. Those were the only ones I remember. Usually we had to build or make a project pertaining to the book. Like for the castle book we had to build a model castle. We also read The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.

In sixth grade I read Old Yeller, A Wrinkle in Time, In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson and Island of the Blue Dolphins.

in grade school we didnt have to read any books...but books that I do remember reading were 'Clifford','Where the wild things are' and a lot of Robert Munsch books...if you're Canadian, you know who Robert Munsch is.He wrote books like 'Mortimer','I have to go','paper bag princess'.....if you have a child in kindergarten, I recommend those books, they are a joy to read!
