As a retro-gamer I'd have to go with the one that was released as Final Fantasy II in America a.k.a. IV in Japan (you know the one were they travel to the moon in a spaceship and Cecil has to get all the crystals from all over the globe)

It was the game that introduced me to FF and had a stunning soundtrack (even by today's standards).

Final Fantasy 6 (III) has and always will be my favorite but I love Final Fantasy 4 (II) almost just as much.

I voted for VII, but I'm a little disappointed that you don't have IIj and IIIj on the list. I know IIj was a little quirky, but I played it on Origins, and really enjoyed it a lot.

I liked Final Fantasy III/IV the best. My 2nd fave is Final Fantasy III (the OTHER Final Fantasy) because of the job class. Final Fantasy VII was good, but I dont understand all the hype about it.

Number 7, hands down. It's the best game of the series. It was very hard, and had an awesome story line.

Final Fantasy IX for me. I use to like FFVII the best, maybe because it was my first, but the more I played IX the more I liked it. It was a great mix of old school FF and new ideas.

You also can't beat the whole "You're Not Alone" scene.

                          Final Fantasy III (U.S.)

This game really cemented my final fantasy addiciton...
The DAY i got the game, we had a flipping Blackout where we live..

I read through the instruction booklet for like 4 hours before the power came back on..

FF VII was cool as well...( I went to play it the other day, only to realize my FIRST disc is missing.... )

                            Another vote for VIII.

It was my first Final Fantasy and I loved every minute of it-- graphics, soundtrack and cinemas all pleasing to the senses. I still remember being blown away at the end of disk one. Ice javelin impalement, nooooo!

I was a master at Triple Triad game and collected all of them. Although I recall going through some elaborate tricks to avoid the random rule.

So that game essentially brought me into the series. VII and IX would follow closely as runner-ups. I've attempted to play VI but never really got all that far in it. From all the good things I keep hearing I should give it another try.

FF4 was my favorite. I remember renting a SNES and the FF4 cart when they first came out and playing the game for 36 hours straight (no exaggeration). The story was so engrossing, the protagonists were all great characters, and the antagonist was someone who was genuinely menacing and worthy of the story. FF6 was good too but it seemed like a lot of the characters were ripped off from FF4. Kefka couldn't hold a candle to Golbez/Zemus/Zeromus as far as superbosses went, and I actually preferred the prefab party system of FF2 over the ability to choose party members in FF3.

I'd have to say that FF4 ranks as the best-plotted RPG for any platform EVER, except possibly for Bard's Tale 3.

Definently III (VI) followed by IX.
