Ever since I`ve played the Zelda series, I`ve been kind of confused about the whole storyline and Characters of the series.

In example, Zelda 2 AoL took place after the Original Zelda. Here, Link must awaken a Zelda from long ago. Whatever happened to the Zelda rescued from Zelda 1? Did she just left Hyrule to join forces with G.I. Joe in their battle aganist Cobra?

To put it quite frank, in the later sequals, there is a different Link, Zelda, and Gannon. Do each game take place at a different timeline?

Hi. Nice to meet another fellow Zelda fan. :D

For an in depth answer you might want to try google and find some Zelda fan sites (I can't remember any at the moment),

But the gist of it is this every Zelda game for a new system is a new descendant of Link and Zelda (although Ganon is ageless and everliving like Mumm-Ra from Thundercats). there's like a thousand years of history in between each game.

Chronologically the earliest ancestor of Link is from the N64 games- Ocarina/Majora with the very latest being from the original NES Games and the cartoon.

I know its all confusing but I recently beat all the games over the course of a few months again and noticed how some areas of Hyrule are named after long dead characters and it makes sense through cataclysmic events and natural disasters that the geography would change which is why the maps are all different in each game.

As far as the newest Zelda game- Twilight Princess I can't tell you where that falls in the story because its not out yet, but here's a layman guide.

      Earliest: N64 Games (OOT/MM)

Gamecube Games and Gameboy Advance/DS Games (TWW)

SNES Games and Gameboy Games (ALTTP)

      Latest: NES and Cartoon (TLOZ/TAOL)

      Hope that helps!

I was thinking that the Zelda in AoL was the same from the original, but it's been so long since I've read the stories that I may be wrong.

What I do know is that there are presumably two timelines, both split off from the ending of Ocarina of Time (so says Aonuma more or less in an answer reguarding WW placement in the series). So we know that there are two timelines after OoT, but which one a lot of the games take place in isn't known.

I think the Four Swords games and Minish Cap take place before OoT, all three having different Links and Zeldas. Then OoT splits, MM has the same Link as OoT in one timeline, but WW has a different one (as will Twilight Princess, taking place between OoT and WW) in the second. The Oracle games share the same Link and Zelda and LttP and LA share the same Link too. But where they are in the timelines, along with the original two, I don't know.

Heck, I don't even know if it makes sense. I tried to explain it with as little words as possible to avoid a long winded post.

Ahh, I see. I always knew that The Minish Cap would be the first as it explains how Link has that trademark green hat.

in minish cap, it wasnt link. and the hat wasnt a hat, it was a minish wizard/magician cursed to become an odd duck shape.

But in the end of the Minish Cap, Ezlo (The Duck/Hat Thingy) gives Link a green hat before enterting some sort of portal as a gift to remember him by. That would explain why he, or any of his descendants for the matter, wears that hat. It`s some sort of tradition in a matter of spearking.

Ocarina of Time explains not only the hat, but the entire traditional Link outfit. Also, Hyrule (the nation) didn't exist until after OoT Link was born.

Personally I thought it went like this:

                    Minish Cap
                    OoT/MM
A Link to the Past/Link's Awakening
Legend of Zelda/adventure_of_link (no pun intended )
                    Oracles

..and as for WW and TP, I have no idea.

Personally I thought Minish Cap should be first since that's how Link got his hat (play the game all the way through and you'll see what I mean)

But then, where do the Gorons come in.. ? :?

Here`s another question, if the series is called the Legend of Zelda, why is it that Link is the hero? Shouldn`t Zelda be the one saving Hyrule rather than Link?

Who knows, but it sounds better than The Legend of Link. :p

As far as the order it can be narrowed down in parts like this:

                        LoZ > AoL
                        LttP > LA
                        OoT > TP > WW
                        OoT > MM
OoS > OoA (or vice versa)
                        MC > FS > FSA

But then what order each part goes in is completely up for debate. One time Shiggy did say OoT was the very first in the timeline, but I still swear at one point it was changed to the Four Swords games, which then would mean Minish Cap is the first. The reason this whole thing is so confusing is that there wasn't a timeline until OoT came along, so now they have to fit things together. And also, Link in Minish Cap is as much of a Link as the rest.

                          Like I said before

Minish Cap is when Link first got his hat

So hands down it should be #1

Twilight Princess takes place a few decades after Ocarina of Time.

And as I said before, the kingdom of Hyrule is formed right before OoT, that's more important then Link's hat.

Well, as far as we know, he's got:

                                    An uncle (ALttP)
                                    A grandfather (Minish Cap)
A mother (though she has yet to be revealed, this is given in Ocarina of Time, after you beat the Forest Temple)
A sister (apparently iirc the point in WW is to find his sister)

                                    ...and that's it.

PS: What if those fairies that always follow Link in the N64 zelda's were the spirit(s) of his mother
