SHEESH! I was just thinking about him a week or so ago. Almost all of the older actors I've been thinking of this summer have been passing away!! I prefer to think of it as just one of those stupid coincidences.

But, yeah, Sherman Hemsley was another one of those TV legends you'll never ever have from today's world of television.

Yeah I just heard today. This is terrible news and the least you could do is have the decency to call him by his real name

He was 74. In this day and age 74 is old, but not really old. My dad is 3 years older than he was and had a quadruple bypass back in 1985.

BTW Isabel Sanford (Weezy)died back in 2004 at age 86. I never realized there was a 21 year difference in their age until today.
Florence, Jenny and the second Lionel are like the only ones still alive from the show.

Please forgive my late response here. But if you're willing to hang with me for awhile I'd like to share an observation.

My first encounter with Sherman Hemsley as George Jefferson was the 1974 episode about Lionel's engagement to Jenny. As long as I live I will never forget the scene with Archie and mother Jefferson, that old gal rocks! As for Mr. J himself, I must admit I was not impressed. George Jefferson seemed like any standard television character to me. My sister and her friends plus most of my friends seemed unmoved by Sherman Hemsley's character too.

All in the Family - 1974...

But my parents - my mom and dad acted like George Jefferson was all that! Neighbors and teachers responded to Geroge Jefferson too. So I concluded that Sherman Hemsley as George Jefferson was a generational phenomenon. So you can imagine my surprise to see The Jeffersons get their own show.

I managed to hang on for season one but I lost interest during season two. Mr. Jefferson was like a broken record to me, I knew what he was going to say before he said it. The Jeffersons went on a lot longer that I ever imagined, ten years.

But a strange thing happened after The Jeffersons went off the air. Isabel Sanford and Sherman Hemsley made guest appearances, alone and together, on talk shows and sitcoms. His cameo appearances were wonderful.

Remember the Jefferson Cleaners skit from "In Living Color" ?

                            Store clerk with attitude...

How about that episode of "Married...with Children" when Peg wanted Al to take her to "The Jefferson's Movin' On Up Tour" when it opens in Chicago? It seemed that Louise and George had become cultural icons beyond the characters they played on TV.

But not just television, remember those radio ads for Seven Eleven slurpees back in the 1990's? Isabel and Sherman were a joy to listen to and those slurpee spots were quite popular.

You guys have already mention some of Sherman's other work in media. Isn't it funny how characters can grow on ya, as if they were real in themselves and had become an old friend? The years went by an I learned to like George Jefferson after the original series ended. Imagine that!

                            REST IN PEACE SHERMAN HEMSLEY

The Eldorado is dead. Long live the Eldorado.
