I haven't enjoyed most "mainstream" music in years. I assume that means whatever is played on top 40, club music or modern rock radio stations right?

Although bands I enjoy have been on SNL, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, also commercials and stuff. So maybe indie bands are more mainstream than I realize. But for the past 8-9 years I've been into progressive rock, classical, 80s new wave, power pop and very recently, some thrash and progressive metal.

I'm confused..what's Mainstream? When you said Mainstream I assumed that meant what was played on the radio (Beatles would be included..) like anything actually popular and out there and non mainstream would be underground stuff that few have heard of, cult popularity like stuff maybe played on a college radio station or only heard in bars.

Like..I thought Mainstream was anything that never popular to the masses, so Beatles, Beach Boys, even 40s music if it was ever popular or played on the radio would still be Mainstream? Underground music =not mainstream? Or is Mainstream only what is popular at the curren time frame?

if Mainstream means anything played on the radio that is/was ever popular, I'd say i've always been interested in that and have never really gotten into the edgier bands that are not so much played on the radio.
      :)

Beatles, Beach Boys and other pop bands are very much mainstream. But even within those bands, there's music with an experimental edge not meant for mass radio play.

I was mainly referring to music of the past 15 years. There's some great stuff that pops up once in a while, but it's usually vapid, derivative trash.

Mainstream music... Uhm no I guess. In the late 70's up to early 90's I don't think true heavy metal was mainstream enough. Some got to MTV but thats about it.

Funny, I've been listening to classic metal recently and I'm surprised how many records some of those bands sold.

I was in 5th or 6th grade, so mid-90s I guess? My parents were not big top 40 fans, we mostly listened to oldies.
