Perhaps the internal battery that stored the game's data is dead. That's usually the problem.

Like what mr3urious said, its probably that the battery died. Internal battery's in most NES games usually last for 5-7 years. And the more you play, the faster it wears out. I have heard soultions that you can open up the cart and try to recharge it. I myself, never tried it, so I dunno if it actually works. Its that, or the game might need cleaning.

Do a google search. There are places that will sell you replacement batteries.

yeah i actually had the same problem with my legend of zelda game for my NES, and eventually just decided to download it for an emulator instead. it's not really the same, but it's still zelda

You cannot recharge a gamecart's internal battery.

Unless you wire up a clip to the place where the battery is supposed to be (matching polarity, of course), but then again, who'd want a big fat battery hanging off a cart ?

Generally, gamecart batteries last ~10 years. LoZ is near 20 years old. Get a new battery, pronto.
