Well I finished the game. Took about 60 hours with trying to feed all the animals, restore all the plants, find all the treasures etc. I tried to do all the sidequests too but there were a couple I couldn't figure out.
Postgame thoughts --
-At first the combat was boring, but it gets more interesting as you get more weapons.
-Conversely, the brush techniques get pretty lame later in the game. I understood water spout letting you draw water from a source to a target at first. But when fire, lightning, and ice have the same limits, that's really weak. Same with the catwalk technique. Come on. I'm a god. I should be able to use these powers wherever I want.
-Way too god damn much talking in this game. I would like to hear the story but by the end of the game I was skipping large swaths of it because they belabor every damn point. I don't mind a little expository dialogue but this game really has about 20 or 30 times too much.
-I like the game layout. The dungeons aren't overcomplicated or annoying. The world terrain is varied, and the areas have good complex shapes, yet with the map function they are not difficult to navigate.
-I would love to see a 2D version or sequel of this game. I think that could be awesome. I would much rather play that than Okamiden. 2D wouldn't sell in the late 90s, but we are beyond that now. It's a great format and I want to see it return to strength. New SMB, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and Muramasa Demon Blade all showed that a great game doesn't have to be 3D. New Super Mario Wii shipped more than twice as many copies as Mario Galaxy or SSBB. There's a reason! Unfortunately I think the big game studios have trouble realizing it.
