Also REsident Evil and Crash Bandicoot the first one. I've never heard of this very popular Mario RPG then again I'm not very much of an RPG person, I probably heard of it then blew it off. The only game that I play that has RPG elements is Castlevania. Furthurmore this was actually the year I when made the transition from Nintendo to Sony.

Ok so there was a VHS tape for Super Mario RPG? I recieved VHS tapes from Nintendo Power about Donkey Kong Country, The Nintendo 64, Diddy Kong Racing, DKC 64/Jet Force Gemini and my favorite the one about Star Fox 64. I know there was a VHS about Pokemon I never got but I never knew there was one about Super Mario RPG. I feel gipped now.

It actually wasn't a tape for any specific game. It had previews for several games on it, as well as some tips for currently released games such as Donkey Kong Country 2, Yoshi's Island, and Killer Instinct. It was called "The Invasion of Nintendo" This is the tape I'm talking about:

        Here it is on Youtube:

I also remember that Mario RPG commercial with the old guy in it. I was actually looking for it online for years, and couldn't even find it on YouTube. Someone finally uploaded it a couple of years ago, and now you can find it everywhere.

I first rented it with a friend in late June, then got it for my birthday a couple of weeks later...so it dominated my summer that year as well. In my opinion, it was the last great title released on the system. Donkey Kong Country 3 (which came out later that fall), was okay...but I didn't like it as much as the first two DKC games.

If you subscribed to Nintendo Power, do you remember when they would occasionally send out VHS tapes to subscribers about upcoming games? I got my first real glimpse at Super Mario RPG on a tape they sent out in December of 1995. It showed some footage of the game, while also showing two old ladies having a discussion about it...one of them saying she wants to get a tatoo of Luigi on her left butt-cheek. This was during Nintendo's "Play it loud!" campaign, where they were trying to ditch the kiddy image that Sega had pegged them with in their attack commercials during the early 90's. The whole tape had this "90's grunge" vibe to it.

Yup yup i subscribed to Nintendo Power since i was 6 and got those tapes too, that was cool to see footage of SM RPG and was anticipating sense. Does anyone remember that hilarious commercial with the old coot talking about the game?

Pilotwings 64 is another 96 game I had a lot of fun playing. For hours I used to just fly around in the gyro copter while listening to Cake's cd Fashion Nugget.

Same story Jennings, i was excited about Super Mario RPG in the months about the news on that game and wanted it, do you remember in April of 96 when they aired that hilarious commercial with the old coot telling the story? it's on youtube, when i was taping Simpsons it came out and i was excited for the game. I bought it too on the last day of school on the same grade as well with paper route money i had saved and i loved the game, ooh it was something to behold as i thought it was the grandest Mario game on the SNES around at that time.

Oooh Donkey Kong Country 3 was cool too, i loved that game and the series.

That's normal. Companies continue making games for established systems well after a new system is introduced. Sometimes it's because they started a game before the new system's release, sometimes it's because they don't want to risk making games for what may turn out to be an upopular system, sometimes it might be cheaper to make it for the existing system, sometimes they want the large established customer base that the existing system has, and there are probably hundreds of other reasons.
They still made GBC games after GBA was out, they kept making GBA games after the DS was released.

Yeah, I checked wikipedia and they still release sport games on the PS2.

Yes. The SNES was actually discontinued in 2003, and its final game was released in 2000. That was Japan-only though. Elsewhere it ended in 1999.
