This is just a rumor as of now, but IGN says they have a source that's reporting that Microsoft's next Xbox system will not play used games, forcing gamers to have to buy all their games brand new and factory sealed.

    http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/121/1217257p1.html

As crazy as this may sound, I could picture Microsoft being greedy enough to do something like this. I'd imagine in order to make this work, they would have to make it so each individual game comes with a specific code, like the registration number. Once you enter the code into your system over Xbox Live or you register your game, it becomes unlocked and your system can play it...and ONLY your system can play it. Try to play your game on someone else's Xbox 720, and it will not work. If you try to enter your game's code on someone else's system, Microsoft's database will show that the code has previously been entered on another system, and it will be rejected. This is how they would prevent people from buying previously owned games.

If this rumor turns out to be true...than I will avoid the Xbox 720 like the plague. Unless Microsoft lowers all of their brand new games down from $60 to $40 or $30.

Nah, used game market wouldn't die, just the xbox market. People would shift over to the playstation and/or PC, or just go buy xbox360 consoles & tell the 720 to screw itself. Microsoft would do themselves more harm than good if they did that.

I think they should cancel the release of the Xbox 720 altogether because of this shit. Think about the Virtual Boy, remember how much of a failure that was?

That'll be the dumbest move ever. Then again how many times we have seen money doing a 720 twist on their greedy minds.

I agree with you, theres no way anyone except the most loyal of xbox devotee's would get a 720 if they were unable to use any game except brand new one's. Also what about borrowing games or taking a game to a friends, would you not be able to do this now. Sounds like a pretty stupid idea to me.

so what happens when you drop $70 for a game and don't like it? Or your broke friend wants to barrow it?

I don't see this happening. Kids wouldn't not be able to bring their games over to a friends house for a sleepover. What about rentals? What if your system craps out? They would have to have special disk for renting and those would have a high risk of not being returned since they could be played on multiple systems.

I'm guessing the disk would have some type of transponder in them like stores use to prevent theft since not all systems can or will be online. Once played on a system it would write the systems ID on it and people would not be able to be played on another system. It's possible they may allow it to be played on a certain number of systems. Again I don't see it happening and it may even violate some laws.

And I think it might result in a sales drop and subsequent discontinuation of the Xbox 720.

This won't happen. MS might be thinking about it, but there will be such a backlash and outcry they will back off (this time). Every generation, resistance to this kind of thing drops a little more and acceptance of download-only content grows. I won't be surprised if none of the consoles use physical media at all in two or three generations.

Ha Ha, I'm glad I'm a sony man when it comes to gaming.

I've always said fuck microsofts gaming systems, they need to stay focused on computers and then maybe Apple will stop shitting on them.

I think it would backfire but what if Sony decides to do this too?

A lot of the game companies lose money from used game purchases, but something like this could deter a lot of people from buying a game. I see this as a double edge sword, a lose/lose situation. Unless all platforms decide to go this route.

Besides they partially do this with PC games already (in a way).

These rumors better be false, or else the Xbox 720 will become the new Atari 5200!
I'd just stick to the Wii U and PS4 if the Xbox 720 rejects used games!

Honestly, how and why the fuck would it not be able to play used games? Makes no damn sense to me. What, are they gonna have a code on the disc that only lets it be played in the first system its put into? C'mon now, thats gotta be just a rumor.

Games are just a trojan horse. Xbox is here because Microsoft wants to be in your living room. Not because rich microsoft assholes care about games or whether you can afford them.

I have always been super into video games, but as I get older and work/family take up more of my time I find myself playing games less. Every Generation I have purchased all of the consoles available, but I am thinking next gen I'll probably only buy 1. It was going to be the 720 or Wii U, but if Microsoft pulls this crap it will 100% be Wii U(my mind isn't totally made up yet, plus I haven't heard anything about PS4 yet). I only buy 1 to 3 new games a year and maybe about 15-20 used. I don't think the game industry realizes how many new sales are fueled by the selling back of used games. This type of move will only hurt new game sales as well, the average person would just buy less games and the hardcore gamer that buys, beats and then sells back won't have that little extra from selling back a game to purchase another new game so they will probably buy less new games as well. This move would be bad for the industry as a whole.
