I know the Genesis was Sega's most successful video game console. When Sega jumped on the CD "bandwagon", starting with the Sega CD (which was an add-on accessory for the Genesis console)...then Saturn...then Dreamcast, they failed big time. The Saturn and Dreamcast I believe were in competition with Sony's PlayStation and PlayStation 2 respectively. I never owned a Sega Saturn, but did have a Dreamcast, which in my opinion was a decent system. If Sega continued with making video game systems, I've often wondered what their "answer" to the PlayStation 3 would've been like! I probably would've been the proud owner of both systems, since I'm a fan of both Sony and Sega. Anyway...Why did Sega's CD-based systems fail???

Well... don't read the article... because the article sucks.

It's the comments that are are much more informative and gives you insight as to what became of SEGA's fate of their CD based format and why it died. There are 53+ of them that get into a heated debate vs a lousy article that tell not much of anything.

        Long story short:
Saturn = no good 3rd party & Sony.
Dreamcast = too much Sony hype... again, some of the 3rd party support was lacking. The launch was overshadowed too much by Sony's announcement.

I think part of why the Saturn failed could be:

Wasn't advertised as widely as Sony's PlayStation
No RF lead included with the console as standard

As I've mentioned when I started this thread, if Sega would've pressed on and continued making game systems when Sony introduced the PS3, it would be interesting to know what their new system would've been like. I'm guessing it would pretty much have all the features of the PS3...blu-ray, wifi, etc..

Sega's early cd systems were overpriced, underpowered and lacked good games.

Dreamcast (one of my personal favorite systems ever) just came out a bit too late. I think if the dreamcast had came out a year or two earlier, we would be playing Sega consoles today.

I was satisfied with the Dreamcast.

                  Sega Saturn-

                  Sega Dreamcast-

Despite a solid lineup of games, impressive graphics and online play, most Japanese customers bought a PS2 for the DVD player

From what I've heard Sega would release consoles and add-ons too frequently like the 32x not having a very big library and then releasing a 32 bit console only to be dominated by its 64bit competitors.

I enjoyed the Sega CD and Dreamcast. I never played the Saturn though, I've heard that it's overlooked though. When I waas ready to move onto the next "new thing" at the time, I went w/ the PS1 over the Saturn and I took a chance because Sony was new to the game (no pun intended) at that time and it was a decision I didn't regret. I would still like to check the Saturn out though.
