I've been on a bit of a Playstation mood lately and it got me thinking about the first time I ever saw the Sony console.

Back in 95 my only gaming magazine at the time was Nintendo Power so I had no idea what the Playstation was when it first came. I remember seeing it for the first time on display at Toys r Us.

I thought it was such an odd machine and I honestly just didn't understand it when I tried it. Shapes instead of letters for buttons, what!?!. Also the demo playing in the system was Oddworld, again also I didn't get at the time. I just wanted my character to jump, and why is he farting so much?

I do remember thinking to my 12 yr old self that this thing was gonna fail. What little I knew about games back then was that their was Nintendo and Sega and that was it, other systems 3DO and Turbo Grafix-16 failed so will this. Of course I was way wrong and two years later I finally got one thanks to games like Resident Evil and Final Fantasy 7.

wow, i didn't even know that a demo for oddworld existed. but the farting is pretty much just an oddity like the rest of the game, hence the name. shaunbadia and i are fans of the series.

anyway, i didn't get a playstation of my own until around 1999 as i had an n64 and saturn before then, but i enjoyed the library of games that i got for it

My reaction was like a kid's reaction when he walks into a candy store. I just had to have a PlayStation.

I thought "finally a system that is capable of making games like the arcade". Around this time I discovered MAME and was able to play the arcade version of many of my favorite games (illegally of course). I also played many PC games and just didn't feel the need to buy one. I did buy a PS2 and a PS3 later on though.

I remember kind of not liking it at first. I thought the controller was weird, and that the CDs would be harder to keep in working condition (which they are, but that's for another day...) Although, back then, I was still loyal to the Sega and N64, and didn't like the fact that another game system was taking over. Now a days, I can't imagine what games would be like without the PS.

I agree Thylacine. Without the Playstation I think the gaming world would be a much different. The Playstation was marketed as the "cool" system and really brought gaming into the mainstream.

I always compare the Playstation to the N.E.S. Both systems re-invtend the industry, introduced new genres and for every great game there were about 5 bad games.

The first time I ever saw a Playstation was back in 1995 at our local Fred Myers (it's a store that only a few states have). The system was set up for play in the electronics section and had a demo disk in it with Wipeout and Twisted Metal on it.

To you tell you the truth, I really didn't even care about it when I saw it. There were still so many good games coming out for the SNES at the time, that I had no interest in the next-gen systems whatsoever.

I was like what the hell is this thing. I could'nt comprehend it at first but I knew I wanted one. I got one the following christmas in '97 or '98 (hard to remember exactly which year). We were the only kids on the block who had playstation and n64. It was awesome.

I remember encountering a demo setup at mediaplay. I thought it was weird that a competing system had a controller so nearly identical to the SNES one, and I found it strange that the buttons had Xs and triangles instead of letters or numbers.
It had either antz or bugs life playing, and my impression was "man, these "wonderful" graphics look like shit. This is supposed to be a huge leap forward, so why does it look like a friggin 2600 game?!"

That's so true. The SNES Final Fantasies aged hella better than the Playstation ones (or at least VII).

I heard my brother talking about it before I saw it. I didn't even think it was a game console really, I thought it would be like a big thing you set up in the house and play in it/with it.

But one day, my brother borrowed it or rented it from Blockbuster. The first game I saw was Gex. Blew my mind! We also had a purple demo disc with a bunch of awesome (at the time) games. I was just so amazed that we were playing of CDs and not cartridges. I also thought the graphics were amazing.

I remember hearing about it in "96" my brother had to tell me about the game Loaded he played at a freinds house saying it was better than Smash TV.

That same year I went to a freinds who said he just got it, they were playing Soul Blade. I was shocked that the characters could side step and the enviroment moved around them, that freaked me out.

Also that for everygame was an intro and all depending on the game actual media footage, that to me was also ground breaking. I remember for awhile there having to watch every intro to games,I really wanted one after seeing all that. Also I didn't like the N64 I was still playing my SNES at the time.

Most of the times that I saw a playstation or saturn demo in a store, I gave up & walked away before the damned thing got it's lazy ass around to loading. Likewise, if I hit the wrong button & got sent back to the menu, then had to wait forever for the PoS to load again, I'd wind up just walking away. The 2 things that made the biggest impression on me were the low quality of the graphics & the insane load times. Give me a cartridge any day.
