What an awesome game, i got this for Christmas when i was 6 for my NES and loved it as i owned the first game with Zelda and loved it. I thought it was superior to the original game at that age, but when i was 15 doing research on the libary's internet on this game i found out the game i grew up with was NOT the original SMB 2.

The real SMB 2 was in Japan but a very difficult one, so we Americans got a Mario enhanced game called Doki Doki Panic but it was a very fresh and addictive experience this game was as it had all 4 main characters from the first game as heroes plus you can toss and grab plus it had a different villain, one of my fave games.

Now we got the actual SMB 2 in Mario All Stars but was tough as tits.

The original one sucked, I'm glad we got ours.

I first found out our SMB2 wasn't the real SMB2 when Super Mario All-Stars came out in 1993, and I read about it in Nintendo Power. Our version of Super Mario Bros. 2 was also eventually released in Japan, where it is known as "Super Mario USA".

I remember a buddy of mine told me that SBM II was actually another game under development. During the middle of the desgining they decided to change it to SMB II is that true? Maybe he didn't know what the heck he was talking about. SMB All Stars is awesome that game still makes the transition from 8bit to 16bit still look great.

I learned about our SMB2 not being the original SMB2 when Mario All Stars came out. I really wanted All Stars for that very reason. I personally didn't like it much and prefer our version of it.

do you not read posts? the OP said the USA SMB2 was actually a game called Doki Doki Panic but hacked to have Mario characters in it.

and this change was made because video gaming got through one major crash, and something like Super Mario 2 extra hard mode would've caused another crash (or so this is what Nintendo theorized at the time)

The rumor I always heard was that Super Mario Bros. 3 was actually supposed to be Super Mario Bros. 2. It was taking longer than expected to develop so they merely slapped Mario characters into a Japanese game to ship over here.

I remember in Super Mario All Stars, The real SMB2 was called The Lost Levels or something like that. It is hard so I can certainly agree with the theory of them figuring it was too hard for American audiences.

Yep, lost levels. I remember when all stars/lost levels came out & I wondered where this other game came from. I thought it was (as the title implied) some levels that had been made for SMB1 but not used for whatever reason.
Besides the increased difficulty, one of the reasons they decided against using lost levels as SMB2 in the US was because it was so much like SMB1. It's much more of a SMB1.5 than a SMB2.

This is a fact a lot of people seem to neglect, for some reason. It should also be noted that the game the international SMB2 was converted from had more involvement from Miyamoto than the Lost Levels did. I don't know why some people (such as the Irate Gamer for instance) say they would have rather had the original one, personally I prefer new games to slightly edited versions of older ones. Although Nintendo clearly doesn't feel the same way with the recent Galaxy and New SMB sequels...

I didn't like SMB2 much when I first encountered it, because it was so un-mariol-like. I wound up liking it later though, after playing it on all stars quite a bit.

Lost levels is by far the most appropriate name for the original SMB2, it truly is like a level pack for SMB1. I guess it was the precursor to all the expansion packs that modern games get.

Thinking about it, Zelda 2 is probably the SMB2 of the Legend of Zelda series. Some people disliked Zelda 2 because of how it's the "odd one" of the series. Oh well. That aside, I did love SMB2. It was so goofy and fun.

I love both SMB2 and Zelda II more than most games in their respective series. I guess it's because, unlike most people, I like games that take risks instead of just redoing the same stuff over and over - and in those two cases I think they did a great job deviating from the predictable formula yet keeping essential series staples.

I was never a zelda fan. In fact, when I first played the original zelda, I hated it. (Though, strangely, I later came to love a very similar game, neutopia on TG16.) When I played zelda 2, I was neith impressed nor offput, it was just "eh, whatever". I never did really play original zelda again, although I did play the gameboy/color/advance games & the SNES ones. They were "ok", but I wasn't thrilled by them.

I'm not big on Zelda either, in fact I don't even like Ocarina of Time.

When hitting things with your sword gets boring about thirty minutes into a game where you hit things with your sword, it's not gonna keep you interested that long.

Apparently, there are enough fans around who don't mind hitting things with their swords. lol

I still like exploring and all that in the Zelda games, although, when I played the first one, I found it boring. I was also 7 at the time, and had the attention span of a fly, probably. I found Super Mario Bros more fun. A Link to the Past got me more into the series...I was also older and had more patience for solving puzzles.

What I didn't like when I originally played zelda was that it seemed to have no point. You just wandered aimlessly around endless fields, killing endless bad guys. It felt like the 8-bit version of pitfall.

I know, and I don't understand that. I understand why it'd be a popular game, don't get me wrong, but as popular as it is... doesn't come close to the top 25 games of all time in my opinion.
