I've been seeing the redesigned Nintendo Wii that they released last month. It now sits horizontally instead of vertically. The thing about it is that it's no longer backwards compatible with Gamecube games or accessories. They completely removed that feature. Less functionality with the regular price.

If that's the case, what's the buying incentive?

Hahaha, all they did was take out features. The Wii is so much cooler when it's up vertically and the best part about the system is that it can play GameCube games.

I guess this means the Wii-U will most likely not support GameCube games either. I bet they're fallowing in Sony and Microsoft's footsteps. They're gonna start putting GameCube games on the Nintendo shop.

Not really a huge difference other than you can no longer play GameCube games. You can easily put the older models vertically.

This means GameStop will very shortly discontinue selling GameCube games.

You know what does support gamecube games? A gamecube.

*yawn* Wiis were ALWAYS able to sit horizontally, people.

but yeah, lack of gamecube functionality is a pain in the ass. especially considering some games used a gamecube controller even though it was a Wii game

Yeah, I don't understand why they would remove backwards compatibility. There's absolutely no reason, it makes zero sense. The next Xbox system better play Xbox and Xbox 360 games.

I think they're trying to take a hint from sony. This has to be one of the most asinine things I've heard in a while. Bravo nintendo.

They're probably trying to force people to buy wii games instead of old gamecube games. I guess it never occurred to them that if they made games, a system, and periphreals that didn't suck, people would WANT to buy them.

90 million Wii systems sold yet you say people wont buy them? Nintendo doesn't have a problem selling consoles. Rather, it has issues keeping people interested in the console.

This system would be a smart tactic by Nintendo, to gather some of the people still on the fence, if it was priced accordingly. Regular price yet missing a crucial feature?

Nintendo's poor decision making over the last 10 years has led to a lot of long time fans abandoning them, the "hardcore" fans. But they have gained a lot of new fans (children, parents, grand parents) with the gimmicks of the Wii. Those are the people who won't care about the removal of backwards compatibility because they're not really "gamers", they're casual players and have not played/don't care about older gen games.

I will honestly say that the GameCube was Nintendo's last hardcore console. I really hope I am proven wrong but that will not happen for a long time considering the Wii-U will be terrible. Unless they make every game have the option to use a classic controller with NO need to use their gimmicks.

FIRST The PS3 gets redesigned to not play PS2 games
THEN The DS gets redesigned to not play GBA games
NOW The Wii gets redesigned to not play GCN games?!?

                            What the hell?!?

I was already aware of this "new and imp-RUINED" iteration of a great console.

If my Wii broke and I couldn't find a new GCN compatible one anywhere, I'd buy a used GCN compatible one, Simples!

It seems Xbox is the only one who hasn't removed backwards compatibility yet. I REALLY hope the next Xbox supports it (All 360 AND all Original Xbox games).

If Nintendo is concerned over cost cutting measures, sell a Wii without a game (NSMB/MKWii) and soundtrack. Is the inclusion of a game suppose to take the place of the elimination of CGN backwards compatibility while justifying the $149.99 price?

I heard in a press release that the Wii and DS weren't intended as casual console in the first place...

So, they intended the Wii and DS to be hardcore consoles and failed epicly? IMO, they shouldn't make systems for the current generation of gamers but for the gamers who have been playing since the original NES. I understand they want to gain new fans but it's not worth losing the old fans over.

Ignore the current generation? Bad, bad business. Especially when those "original" fans dwindle. Half of them don't buy new things. They still have the original NES, or they use emulators, or they have kids and stuff and no time to play games any more, or they got xbox/ps3. Nintendo should make systems for both, which is what I thought they were doing at first. But the VC store is kind of dismal. So is the wiiware. I've only looked a couple times recently, do they take games out of it after a while? Also 3D Mario sux!

They should make systems for new customers and make (some)(more) games for old customers.

Well I mean if you take all the wii games and put them against any other generation of nintendo games, the wii fails miserably. i don't mean legitimately make retro style games (although that would be sweet), I mean make games like they used to (good). It's kind of embarassing that the VC games (NES and SNES games) are better than all of the Wii retail games don't you think?

But seriously, think of Donkey Kong Returns for example and how much of a disappointment it was. if they would have made it the same style as the snes donkey kongs, it would have been one of the best games ever. they need to STOP having motion controlls and just have only the classic controller.
