To me that is completely unacceptable for a Zelda game. Finally at this point things seem to be looking better. The beginning portion of any game can be the make it or break it and I wonder how many people will put down the game due to the tedious beginning.
    It's not unacceptable to me.

I can understand wanting to get on with the game but part of the series that I enjoy is exploring and admiring the world. But LoZ is always an epic, right? I get it when cutscenes are too long but I didn't feel the same way in this game. I rather like exploring the new world in each game and taking my time. If I finish a game in 20 hours or less, I kinda feel ripped off! "I paid $30-50 for this and it's over already? That's bullshit."

Wasn't the beginning of Ocarina tedious? I found it that way, a little bit. I was willing to put up with it and I'm glad I did because it's a major contribution to the series mythology. But at the time of my first play it really dragged for me. I didn't have such a problem with Twilight Princess but my girlfriend who was watching did. She was all "ugh when is something gonna happen, this is boring."

I don't think so. Everybody still says Ocarina is the best. Definitely, nobody was calling TP better, nor WW. This time around there are some "10/10"s and "masterpiece"s being lobbed about.

This is where I usually read short reviews for new games:
    http://www.avclub.com/articles/the-legend-of-zelda-skyward-sword,65422/
They definitely don't call it the best ever, but I wonder if it might be. They call the motion plus control a "shameful...unnecessary handicap" but it feels really natural and good to me. I mean I like it to the point where I'm wondering if I'll ever be able to enjoy the older 3D games as much without it. But it does seem to be very subjective unfortunately. Maybe they could have done a better job for some people but I really don't see how this game would work at all without extensive motion controls, unless they just made the enemies simpler and dumber. Also a lot parts where you have to activate something would not work the same way, if at all.

I think that part of OoT's legacy as the best is that it was so new at its time, that it's impossible for anything else to have as big an impact within the constraints of current technology. Each taken on their own merits, I am having more fun in SS than I [remember having] in OoT.

Frickin' tell us about it. I don't know how often you use youtube but this fucking game is the poster child over there for the Nintendo fanboys for all that is right with gaming. From what I've seen it's another Zelda, not necessarily a bad thing because Zelda is great and I'm sure as a fan of the series I'll likely enjoy Skyward Sword (though I did hate Majora's Mask and Wind Waker so it's possible this falls in line with those two). Some people are hailing this as the second coming which to me seems ridiculous since I could rattle off 5 games released this year that easily deserve as much praise or more.

Ocarina of Time lacked any hesitation when throwing Link into a dungeon or other compromising position. Moments after you started you were introduced to the Deku Tree and while small, it was a dungeon. Shortly thereafter you explored Dodongo's Cavern, Jabu Jabu, etc.., Exploring the overworld and getting acquainted with the game for over four hours (before entering a dungeon) did not happen. OOT wasn't a short game either.

The reviews are typical though with the Zelda faithful commonly giving this gave 5 out of 5 stars or 10 out of 10 and raving as if this is the supreme entry into the series. Maybe five years ago I would have given much more merit to some of these reviews but I continue to ask myself if this is the game we waited five years to play. This is the swan song of the Wii?

I don't know how much more I need to play before my opinion might change to one that is highly positive. I've explored the hub. I've flown on the damn bird. Explored the first area on the surface and now I've entered the first dungeon. Nothing yet has made me say WOW.

True. I was talking about the cutscenes. Especially in the very beginning of the game, they're quite long.

I would like to see at least one more major, good game but who knows if it will happen.

You probably never will then. for me the third dungeon and its boss, and the subsequent return to the Sealed Grounds were the biggest, and that's about as far as I've gotten. Beating a certain tough and aggressive enemy for the first time was really satisfying. The 2nd and 3rd dungeons feature very interesting ways to get around.

lol you really hate that bird though. Come on its a lot better than the sailing in Wind Waker.

issues I do have with the game:
-Fi is as annoying as Navi sometimes.
-In a given session, the first time you get a bug of a certain kind or a rupee worth 5+ it gives that whole stupid spiel again. Stop it, I know!
-I'd like to have more towns. I don't think there's going to be any on the ground but I wish there were.
          -No sequence breaking.
-I wish the ground areas were united. I'd rather run from the forest to the desert than return to the air and drop down in another place. More fun.
-I wish it had a new style of graphics. Some people have said the style is a combination of TP and WW. I don't see that, except in the decoration of the buildings, and how some of the people look. I was expecting some cel shading over realistic figures, more painterly, maybe like the promo art. But mainly it just looks like TP with slightly more exaggerated features.

A lot of those affect most of the 3D games.

Besides the "amount of time" thing, I don't know what else anybody could want. I mean yeah the series is formulaic in a lot of ways. I think a radical reinvention would create a lot more rage. It seems like if you take out the motion controls it would just be like a Twilight Princess 2.

I didn't mind the sailing too much although I was really glad when I was finally able to warp. But it was something a lot of people complained about.
Navi was constantly pestering and usually to say something useless to interrupt what I'm doing. Never offering real help like telling me where to go in that damn water temple.

I could have bought the bundle two days before the release date, but it was expensive :( Now buying the game and Wiimote separately is also too expensive. Still is.

I'm really hoping to get Skyward Sword soon. Don't know when, but soon. Probably after Twilight Princess.

Wind Waker is awesome, one of the best zelda games actually. And I'm not afraid to say I liked TP more than OoT. It's essentially the same game with better graphics, it has the same gameplay.

Zelda lacks originality nowadays. But don't get me wrong, I'm a great Zelda fan. I've been playing it since a Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time was awesome and so were MM and WW. But TP was a big disappointment for me, because it didn't bring any significant new features into the series (please, the wii mote doesn't count) and Skyward Sword seems to be an unsuccessful attempt to bring Zelda back to its roots.

What do I mean by this? Look, Oot was the first 3D Zelda game ever, MM was a race against time, WW added sea exploration, but what about TP? There's a light world and a dark one (which isn't new, as this element had already been used in a Link to the Past), horse riding (as already seen in Oot and MM). And now SS has bird riding...

Miyamoto is definitely running out of ideas. But I still want to play this game, because, well, I'm a Zelda fan to the end.

^ It doesn't have to have something new though. The OoT formula worked very well. Why fix something that isn't broken. That's why I liked TP a lot. It kept the same basic gameplay brought it up to today's standards. Perfect. Sure they could risk it by doing something completely new with it and it could be amazing or it could be horrible. Either way, it doesn't make the current style any worse.

I prefer OOT over TP myself. They're both great games, but there were certain little things that were in OOT that they removed from TP (eg. being able to actually dive in the water without using a zora tunic or having a magic meter,)

but those are just some small trivial things, other tahn that TP was good.

Why the hell do people wanna play the same game over and over again? OoT was all right, but it wasn't perfect and really doesn't need any more ports or remakes. It doesn't even have that much replay value.

Ocarina of Time is one of the best games of the 90's.

All those old N64 and Playstation games just haven't aged well at all. The early, blocky, primitive 3D graphics just don't hold up like the 2D graphics of the SNES do. That's why you always hear people asking for remakes of games like "Ocarina of Time" and "Final Fantasy 7", but you rarely hear of people wanting games like "A Link to the Past" or "Super Metroid" remade.

I thought the Gamecube and 3DS versions did a good job on that, though. I don't see a reason for any more.

I don't think they look any worse now than they did in 1998. Did anybody really look at OoT back then and think Link's triangle nose and rectangle legs looked "good"?

The gap from A Link To The Past to Ocarina of Time was substantial enough to gather our attention whether or not we liked or disliked the graphics. I think the overall impression of something new and different overshadowed the actual quality.
