Obviously, video games have changed a LOT since the days of Pac-Man, but for the most part, games are still fairly one-dimensional experiences, more like a rollercoaster ride than a movie or a book, which make you feel genuine emotions and actually think about real-world matters.

I am not sure how many of you have heard the term serious gaming before, but I think it is something worth exploring. The problem with these games - which explore hard hitting issues, like workers rights, genocide and media sensationalism - is that almost all of them are free-ware titles. Granted, there are several games that sort of tackle ongoing modern issues - like GTA V, the next Bioshock title, and the PS3 game Papa Y Yo - but for the most part, games are STILL sort of stuck in this vacuum where they refuse to comment, analyze or assess what is really going on in the world.

So when - if ever - do you think we will start seeing games that at least ATTEMPT to tackle actual subject matters (and not in an exploitative way, like all of those Enduring Freedom games that came out during the last console cycle)?

I bet it is because games take so long to make so if they tried to add real life subjects by the time the game came out said subjects could be irrelevent by then. I don't know, thats my guess.

Video games are escapism. If you're playing video games to deal with real life issues, then you need to get out of the house.

Too true. I remember sitcoms like One Day at a Time used to deal with unthinkable subjects on television today like teen suicide, abortion, pregnancy, etc.

I remember there was a FPS videogame a while back where it re-created battles from afghanistan and Iraq.

quite obviously people were offended by it

The Grand Theft Auto games deal with crime, which is a real subject matter.

I've heard there is a game designed to help teachers deal with suicidal students in a humane manner...

Video games make me feel genuine emotions more than books do. and more than a lot of movies do.

I played tons of Smash Brothers in the past. Now i know how to engage in real life combat. I fight by charging up my attacks and looking for pills on the floor to throw at my opponent, might even find a bob-omb in the pill and kill him.

Now he's making a religious thread. Back then, you couldn't just simply make one of those threads, but those days are gone.
