Similar to the Tom & Jerry one...

    Fleischer (1933-1942 ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLkpo2TMGCY
    Famous (1942-1957 ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UIEVknsUUU
    King Features/Al Brodax (1960-1962 ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jihEX7sSTUA
    The All-New Popey Hour/Hanna-Barbera (1978-1983 ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHkPmKuzGI4
    Popeye and Son (1987-1988 ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIyx2W-Bl3M

This is a tough one for me, I'd have to say it's a tossup between the famous studios ones & the all-new popeye hour ones (which also had the ones with olive in the army & popeye as a caveman).

I don't think I ever saw the KF/brodax ones as a show, but I'm 99% certain that I saw them stuffed into kids shows such as captain kangaroo & romper room. It's really hard to give them a consistant quality rating, because they were done by several different studios at once. Some were decent, while others were horrid.

Definitely the Fleischer years, Popeye the sailor meets Sinbad the sailor and Popeye meets Alibaba and his forty Theives are my favourites from that era.

The popeye cartoons from the Famous studios era were pretty funny too.

Its a close call for me. Maybe the Famous Studio.

The 1980 movie with Robin Williams is awesome.

I like the Fleischer and Famous era of the Popeye cartoons especially the world war two popeyes.

I'll take the Fleischer run, mainly because of Popeye's mumbles.

From what I hear most of the cast was jacked up on something while filming it.

I like the Famous Studios/A.P.P. ones the best. The All-New Popey Hour second. Popeye and Son and its 80s vibe didn't mix well. Fleischer ones were too old for me. BTW like most cartoons of its time there were some pretty bad racist innuendos on the old ones.

Hard to say but the ones from the 40's were pretty awesome and the All New Popeye Hour was good. And I don't know what era was Private Olive Oyl and Alice the Goon, but it was nice to see a change of pace for Olive and Alice.

The popeye hour (late known as the popeye & olive show) was the one that had private oyl, the goons, etc.

Unlike other classic cartoons (like tom & jerry or bugs bunny), the original era is actually one of the least familiar to me. I don't think I had seen any of the fleischer ones prior to cartoon network's "late night black & white" show.

I wonder why popeye hasn't had a new series since the 80s? Tom & jerry, looney tunes, disney, etc have all had more recent shows.

I can't say with this. I like a bit of all of them. It's not like Tom & Jerry for me. I've watched loads of Popeye over the year, even the Fleisher ones (way before CN)...I think it might be a toss up between Fleischer and Famous.

Well since the 80's Popeye did get a new computer animated movie which follows yet another search for Poopdeck Pappy and his own ride at Islands of Adventure.

I still say it'd be cool if they brought Popeye back. I mean he's a lot more bad ass then most of the cartoons on tv today. I can totally imagine him in a new series, similar to that of the Mummy animated series. A globe hopping action cartoon following the adventures of Popeye and his rag tag crew as they compete with the Sea Hag (and possibly Bluto) for some of the world's most powerful treasures. And naturally aside from some old school fight scenes, you'd have that classic Popeye humor.

^ Would be nice to see a modern take on Popeye but only without CGI. Same characters with their particular personality. Popeye's mummbles a must. No pop stars giving voice overs.

I'm asking to much I guess.

I think I prefer the Fleischer/Famous Cartoon shorts. I remember watching them on Cartoon Network back in the late 90s.
